Terrible Experience. Choose Wisely.
Let me start by saying — I understand this is a Quick Service Restaurant (QSR). I get the concept: fast-paced, high turnover, limited frills. That’s fine. In fact, I expect to stand, queue up, and not be pampered. But what I don’t expect is a total breakdown in basic customer experience.
Food? Good. No complaints there. Price? High. But here’s a tip: get a parcel and run. Because for the price you pay, expecting a decent dining experience would be... optimistic at best.
So what’s the issue?
Well, despite how good the food is, the sad irony is—you won’t actually get to experience it the way it deserves. This is a no-seating, all-standing restaurant—which, on its own, is fine if managed well. But it isn’t. The chaos is real.
Word of advice: don’t even think of taking your elderly parents here. It’s not worth the ordeal. If you’re a group of friends, or a couple who’s okay standing, juggling plates, and navigating the madness—you might just survive the mess. Might.
Let me walk you through the chaos: Step 1: The Token Illusion
You pay at the counter, get a receipt with a token number, and wait near the delivery area. Sounds organized, right? Hold that thought.
Step 2: Welcome to Confusion Central
The delivery area is inside. The standing dining area? Outside. The token board? Oh, it's there… but they don't use it. Speakers to announce token numbers? That’d be too convenient—they don’t exist.
So you’re stuck hovering inside until you collect all your items. Because if you dare leave with just one item to start eating, there’s no way you’ll know when your next one is ready. Unless, of course, you’re fluent in deciphering kitchen staff yelling token numbers from deep within their lungs. (Spoiler: you're not.)
Result? Your first item is soggy, the second lukewarm, and only the last one arrives hot. A fine three-course journey through temperature decline.
Step 3: The Standing Game
Now that you’ve successfully assembled your complete, now-cold meal, you step outside… to find no tables available. Thanks to their glowing Google reviews and cult food status, there’s a mob. And remember, you’re not here to dine—just to stand and hope.
Worse, if it rains—game over. You and your food are both drenched in regret.
Step 4: The Dirty Table Lottery
Ah, you finally spot a free table (well, space to stand near one). But wait—it’s covered in plates from the previous warriors. Only one poor guy is handling table cleaning for the entire crowd. So unless you enjoy dining beside someone else's leftovers, brace yourself.
By the time you actually start eating, your food has completed its journey from hot to cold. Bon appétit!
Final Thoughts:
If you have nerves of steel, the patience of a monk, and zero expectations of basic hygiene or order—go for it. The food is genuinely delicious.
But here’s a golden rule: If you see more than 5 people inside and 5 people outside—abort mission. There are other places. With chairs. And systems.
Better luck...
Read moreAs a food enthusiast who loves exploring restaurants, based on reviews, I recently had the pleasure of visiting Tiffin Shastra. Located in Anna Nagar West, Chennai, this eatery promises an array of Karnataka South Indian delights. Let’s break down my experience: Overall, the place was clean with pleasant staff.
Idli with Karnataka Sambar: The idli was decent, but nothing extraordinary. However, the Karnataka sambar left much to be desired. It tasted like something a beginner or a trainee cook might whip up—definitely not the authentic Bangalore-style sambar as hyped by other bloggers. The excessive use of jaggery dominated the flavors. My rating: 2 out of 5 for the idli and 4 out of 5 for the chutneys.
Vada: These vadas were tiny—almost like miniature versions that could fit on a spoon. I’d call them “Mini Vadas” or “Spoon Vadas.” Honestly, you’d find better-sized vadas at any roadside shop or places like Krishna Bhawan or Araya Bhavan or Sangeetha etc. My rating: 1 out of 5.
Pongal: The Pongal was okay, but it lacked any distinguishing features. It tasted like your typical South Indian restaurant fare similar to what you'd find at any South Indian restaurant. My rating: 3 out of 5.
Benne Dosa: Unfortunately, the Benne Dosa didn’t quite live up to the Karnataka dosa standards. It lacked the crispy top and soft interior that defines an authentic Karnataka dosa. Moreover, the dosa size was disappointingly small, and it seemed to have taken a dip in an oil bath. My rating: 2 out of 5.
Coffee and Bun Butter Jam: Now, here’s where Tiffin Shastra truly shines! The coffee was excellent—mouthwatering and full of flavor. And the Bun Butter Jam? A must-try! It was perfectly done and offered great value for taste. My rating: 5 out of 5.
Final Verdict: While Tiffin Shastra has its hits and misses, I recommend trying their Bun Butter Jam and Coffee. If you happen to be in the area, give it another shot. Overall, I’d rate it 2 out of 5 in terms of value for money. However, it’s disheartening that some early morning visitors (around 6.30-7 AM) don’t seem to mind subpar experiences.
Lastly, the social media hype around Karnataka-style food needs a reality check. Tiffin Shastra should focus on improving its Karnataka sambar and ensuring authenticity in...
