I went to Chontea for the first time on April 14, 2025, without a reservation—just walked in and got lucky with a seat! We were looked after by Sebastian, who was absolutely awesome. He walked us through everything about the matcha we ordered and made the whole experience super fun, even though we were just walk-ins ordering from the à la carte menu. Big thanks to Sebastian! We came back on May 10, 2025 (a Saturday), and the place was packed. This time I had made a reservation, but we still had to wait about 10 minutes looking kind of lost before someone helped us. Ayu served us that day, and she was lovely! But with the place being so full, it was hard to get the same kind of personal service we got the first time. It felt a bit squished inside, and I couldn't help but wonder why I bothered reserving if walk-ins got seated too.

That said, Ayu still explained our order nicely. I tried the Hojicha this time since they were out of ceremonial matcha—not a problem though, it was nice to try something new! Ayu also surprised me with matcha mochi ice cream for my birthday (so sweet of her, even though she accidentally burned her hand—hope it heals soon!). My husband wasn’t too thrilled, though. He ordered the Extra Dirty, which Ayu had warned might take 20 minutes... but it ended up taking a whole hour! I had already finished all my stuff by then, so he wasn’t too impressed—especially since it was the most expensive thing we ordered.

When we were ready to pay, I saw a staff member walking around with the EDC machine, so I asked nicely if we could get our bill. She said sure, but then got caught chatting with another customer, so we ended up waiting another 10 minutes. When Ayu came back, I asked again, and she tried to borrow the machine. That’s when things got a little awkward. The other staff member seemed stressed and kinda snapped, saying the machine wasn’t working and we had to pay in cash. I asked if QRIS was an option, and she raised her voice saying nothing was working. That made my husband think he had to go outside to get cash—which felt a bit unfair considering it wasn’t our fault.

Thankfully, Ayu stepped in right away, apologized, and asked us to wait while she figured things out. She told my husband not to worry about going out for cash, which was really kind of her.
