This evening, at 5:30 pm on a quiet Sunday, I brought my 16-year-old son and three of his friends to play a game of pool to celebrate his birthday. We had just done a day of bowling and go-cart racing so I wanted them to wind down and have a chat. The place was practically empty - just a couple and two older gentlemen. However, when my son went to get change from the bar, the barman informed him that he needed to be 21 to play pool???

I stepped in and asked "do you have to be over 18 to play pool?" The barman insisted that was the rule. Frustrated and bewildered, we left.

I immediately rang the Mansion House next door to ask if the same rule applied there. The barman on the phone actually laughed and said, “Of course not—bring them in, as long as they’re not drinking!”

Philly’s is hands down my favourite pub in Waterford. There’s always a fantastic atmosphere, with both the customers and staff being so friendly and welcoming. Tom, the owner, really runs a great spot – it’s always clean, tidy, and the service is top-notch.

The pint of Guinness here is exceptional – you can tell the beer lines are well looked after because I’ve never had a bad one. If you’re into Japanese or German beers, the selection is absolutely second to none.

The people are what makes a good pub. Not rushed to shoo you away after ordering a pint. The staff here is extremely friendly (shout out to Thomas) and considering their large selection of craft beer and ciders, it’s hard to go wrong. Sit at the bar for good conversation, or cozy up near one of their wood burning stoves; either way you’ll feel at home...
