Having just come from Malka where the incredible food was only outdone by the impeccable service, I was shocked coming here and feeling utterly unwelcome. I come to any restaurant excited to experience the culture, the vibe, and get to know the people - so coming to another Eyal Shani restaurant I was expecting to connect with the staff as I usually do and enjoy my time there. Letโs just say, from the second I walked in to the moment I left, I was completely unwelcome. As if I had an alien mask on, the staff didnโt want to entertain the idea of me being there. What? This was the weirdest and most uncomfortable restaurant experience Iโve maybe had in my life.
Itโs such a shame because the food is so good and I live nearby so I forsure want to make this a local go-to. And I plan to come back with a different group of waiters/waitresses present to enjoy the experience. But this experience completely shocked me to the point of wanting to ask their names and speak to Eyal himself to let him know they are doing his restaurant wrong.
I want to clarify: I review restaurants with the aim of telling you how amazing it is or if need be let you know what to avoid. I came in to Port Saโid so happy, expecting an escape from the busy city and busy life at a nice quiet alcove restaurant. I wish I was overreacting because of a bad comment or something but that wasnโt the case. They were just flat out disinterested in serving me from the onset and thereโs nothing more I can do but comment on my experience because it was truly one of a kind.
Next time I go I will be sure to edit my review to a positive one but for now Eyal must know that his staff is shaming his...
ย ย ย Read moreGreat street food,ย โPort Saidโ is a bar/restaurant onย Har Sinaistโ (next to the big synagogue on Allenby st) is the perfect place to have a drink and enjoy quality food.ย โPort Saidโ is designed withย long tables outside that allows people to gather together and listen to old records playing. The โklunkishโย local DJs (Yoni Sharoni, Shay Landa) and names from all around the world are coming to play in the โPort Saidโ, pure funk, rhythm and blues.ย Once in a while thereโs a records bazaar for those of you who have passion for vintage.
The main thing about the menu is the Casual Middle Eastern touch of Eyal Shani which is famous Israeli chef that made his career not from food but from talking about food, or maybe more accurately about over glorifying food so even the most simple ingredient would seem like itโs divine foodย . This place is so casual that you canโt reserve a table, so keep that in mind. The โPort Saidโ is heaven for vegetarians, most dishes are but you carnivores will love the Minot steak (our favorite dish). Dishes are not expensive, simple and genius at the same time. Alcohol however is not very cheap, but this is good balance if you ask us. The โPort Saidโ is so fresh and cool, you should write it down in...
ย ย ย Read moreFood is good, I had the chicken liver which was yummy but rich. They advise buying 6-8 small plates for a group and sharing as 1 1/2 plates cover a person, but as I'm from the UK and restaurant portions tend to be small in England, so the portions in Israel even for a small plate were large. I was able to survive on 1 plate and the chicken livers is pretty much a meal so if there are 2 people yes you may want to have 1 dish each and share. The food does come out at different times, which they advise but yes can be the reason why they advise sharing lol. So although the food was good, in Israel there is a 'tipping culture' and unlike America (where Customer service is key and they don't tell you to tip) I really didn't appreciate when trying to settle the bill at Port Sa'id being asked 'have you included the tip?' that's just inappropriate. Especially when (im sorry but for some places I have ate at in Israel) the Customer Service was ok, it's almost like tipping is embedded in the hospitality service/culture so you pay whether service is good or bad. Apart from that little...
