My dear. We spent 8 days in Bergamo. We treated this city as a base for further travels and sightseeing in Lombardy. We spent one day in the lower city and one day in the upper city. I would like to emphasize here that we used a total of 6 recommended restaurants and unfortunately this one was not among them. We came here by complete accident, where a group of native Bergamo residents, whom we met on a trip to Bellagio, recommended this AMAZING restaurant to us. It's hard to describe this 4-hour experience. It wasn't just food, just desserts, or just wine. This was not experiencing the "sweet life" of slow time, talking and watching dozens of Italian families keep track of time as if there was no tomorrow. The food was delicious, the service was more than helpful, the main chef of the hall, who spoke English, became a friend for that particular evening. The gold moment was the owner - beautiful Lady who walked between the tables, talking to guests, many of whom she knew by name, sitting down and joking. This is the restaurant where you are NOT just a guest. Here you feel that they are there for you and you are there for them. I recommend this experience to you and be here every time you are in Bergamo.
We will come back here with our entire...
Read moreTrattoria D'Ambrosio - da Giuliana is a must go restaurant in Bergamo. Really good local food at reasonable prices. Arriving at the restaurant, the first thing that catches your attention is the decoration, with old roads and rail signs, lots of hats and tables of different sizes and styles. I suggest sitting outside in the summer to enjoy the fresh breeze. It can be difficult to order since the menu is renewed daily and everything is in Italian, but the waiters are very kind and can help you. Once you´ve chosen what you want, you write it down in a small piece of paper and the waiter will take your order. The complete menu includes bread, the salad buffet, wine, water, 2 dishes, and coffee. For the first plate, I suggest the delicious casoncelli alla bergamasca (local pasta similar to ravioli, stuffed with meat). For the main dishes ask something with the local Polenta since this is the base of their cousins. The house sausages are incredible and also Tallegio cheese and Brazin Cheese is welcome with Polenta. In the end, as the price is fixed, all you have to do is go to the front of the restaurant and pay your bill, you will be surprised how cheap is to eat in the Trattoria D'Ambrosio - da Giuliana. Before you go, have a ristretto with some grappa...
Read moreCame here based on a Reddit thread straight from Milan airport en route to the Dolomites, not speaking any Italian and never having been to a true Italian restaurant like this before. It was a very cool experience for a first meal in Italy! So glad we went!!
The place was absolutely packed with local Italians on their lunch break, and everyone seemed to be really enjoying their food and having a lovely time. The place is huge though, so there was room for everyone who wanted to eat.
The salad bar was robust and the pasta was very good. I think some people actually just come for the salad bar, which is not a bad idea. When it comes to the secondi dishes though, it was not really to my taste. Tbh I had no idea what anything was, the language barrier is real, and so we just picked pretty randomly.
We got an arrosto (meat) that came with polenta, and a veal dish that ended up being cold and covered in a mayo tuna sauce? Not our favorite but it’s fine! Just be prepared to be adventurous if you don’t speak Italian! It’s worth it for the experience IMO. And the price was super reasonable - 12 euros for a complete lunch including wine. So, go experiment and...
