Buca San Petronio — Restaurant in Bologna

OUTSTANDING DINNER ! On our first night ever in Bologna, Italy we decided to take a punt and walk to this downtown dining precinct. My wife and I left our apartment around 7.15pm knowing most of the restaurants did not open until 7.30pm. We walked around and looked at a few places but eventually came upon this very inviting restaurant which had over a 1000 good reviews on Google Maps and none on Yelp...until now. LOOKED VERY BUSY ! I love turning up at a very busy restaurant without a reservation and scoring a table quickly. WHY ? Because I know my 5 star review will add value to any good restaurant. At around 8pm a charming blonde woman greeted us at the hostess desk and informed us they were pretty booked out....after my quick chat with Elena the co-owner we were immediately invited to sit at a table. PRETTY SPECIAL ! We were impressed straight off with the warm friendly service. Elena brought us menus and organized glasses of water to come out. BEER ! I had learnt not to expect mush else but Italian beer at Italian restaurants. Our male server Alessio wisely suggested a Blonde Ale from Sardinia. YES PLEASE ! My beautiful looking blonde ale in a magnificent tall chilled glass came out fast and tasted perfect. STARTER ! Elena suggested we would love the Regional Charcuterie Platter. It came out in a few short minutes with a basket of Complimentary Dinner Rolls. Everything tasted top class and as fresh as can be. FRESH PASTA ! For our entrees my wife ordered the Tagliatelle With Ragu and I decided on the Traditional Tortellini. Elena told us that Tortellini was first invented in Bologna. JUST IN CASE ! Seriously if you are visiting Bologna and you want a GREAT DATE NIGHT...this place is a winner. Our entrees came out courtesy of a food runner and Alessio our server added the finishing touch with some fresh grated parmigiano. YIPPEE KI YAY ! I'm tellin' you that our pasta dishes tasted as good as it gets...perfect texture and amazing flavor. DESSERT ! The dessert menu featured an interesting list. My wife chose Bronte's Pistachio Mascarpone ( topping pistachio crumble and biscuits ) while I had to have the Peach Cooked On Sangiovese Wine With Rosemary Crumble. Around this time I went for a walk and met the stylish co-owner Maurizio outside the bar who gave me his business card. Our beautifully presented desserts arrived and tasted fabulous. WHAT A GREAT INTRODUCTION...

It's really a shame because the food itself is not bad at all. That is if it arrives hence the missing star. The waiters are very polite. The management however proves that even with the best intentions the waiters can't function without proper training and coordination. Here's why service receives 1 star:

The atmosphere is unfortunately connected to the service level which is the sole reason its only 3 stars. Otherwise 5 stars would be appropriate.

Price: If you have a budget of 50€ pr. person I would strongly advise you to go somewhere else. The food cannot compensate the feeling of being politely robbed in broad daylight.

L’unica stella è per il cibo. Prenotiamo una settimana prima per il compleanno di un’amica. Ci avvisano che non è possibile portare torte da fuori e che hanno una pasticceria interna. Va bene se riescono a farci quello che vogliamo. Mandiamo foto e tutto, inoltre chiediamo se possibile portare la torta a mezzanotte e ci dicono che va bene. Il giorno della cena la mattina ci mandano la foto della torta (per fortuna, almeno sapevamo cosa aspettarci) non centrava completamente niente con le foto mandate di riferimento e sembrava stesse anche crollando da un lato. Era bassa, sembrava quasi non ci fosse torta sotto tutto quello strato di pistacchio. La sera arriviamo e ricordiamo di portare la torta a mezzanotte, ma il cameriere ci dice che non è possibile perché la cucina chiudeva alle 23.30, allora chiedo gentilmente di portarcela il più tardi possibile. Era comunque una cena di compleanno a sorpresa. Verso le 10 arriva il cameriere dicendo che non potevano portare la torta perché la cucina chiudeva alle 10.30, e dopo altri 10 minuti ne arriva un altro chiedendo ad alta voce se fossimo pronte per la torta, quindi addio sorpresa. Ma la sorpresa arriva quando ci portano la torta, avevano cancellato parte della scritta che avevamo chiesto di mettere. Che nella foto che ci avevano mandato era corretta, alla richiesta di spiegazioni il ragazzo, molto arrogante, ci ha risposto che avevano controllato e per loro non era corretto in inglese (la frase era scritta così volutamente) e sembrava avessero fatto la correzione con le mani, viste le strisce sulla torta. Mangiamo la torta, i camerieri vengono a scusarsi per aver modificato la torta e ci offrono del prosecco. Una volta andate a pagare ci dicono di averci anche fatto lo sconto per la torta (cosa non vera) visto che il costo era di 27€/kg e quella era una torta piccola per 6 persone, e non ci arrivava nemmeno al kg. E secondo loro costava 38€, da scontrino 30€. Ci hanno tutto il tempo provato a sbrigare affinché ce ne andassimo perché secondo loro avevamo un tempo e non potevamo stare quanto volevamo e dovevano chiudere cassa. (La prenotazione era alle 21, ci hanno cominciato a sbrigare alle 22.30, neanche il tempo di mangiare). La scusa per la torta è che quel giorno era festa e non avevano trovato nulla in giro (avevamo fatto la prenotazione una settimana prima) e inoltre il capo sala ci ha tenuto a precisare che anche lui quando cucina a volte le cose non vengono come in foto. Peccato perché il cibo era anche buono, i camerieri davvero maleducati e arroganti. Non ci siamo nemmeno potuti portare via la torta rimasta e pagata perché loro non fanno take...
