OSTERIA SANT’ ANGELO. ( ex osteria LA RIVIERA) — Restaurant in Gallipoli

In spite of previous reviews, we did not have the same experience. Maybe bad luck with the dishes we ordered, but surely every dish should be prepared with care & passion for the food. Unfortunately, at best it was barely mediocre. Particularly a tasteless tomato dish that looked as though it had been thrown on the plate! Worst of all, we felt uneasy & made fools of when we ordered a starter tuna dish but instead given a plate of shredded mackerel with no explanation. When I called to the waiter to say we had been given mackerel instead of tuna, he quickly removed the dish with no comment or explanation. We were left unsure if the correct dish would be served to us or not, so I asked another waiter who said there was no tuna but it was mackerel instead. I pointed out that this hadn't been explained to us when ordering or when the dish was presented to us! On paying, the waiter said we would not be charged for this dish, but still offered no explanation or apology. Just because we happened to choose cheaper dishes & not the expensive fish dishes & bottles of wine, should not mean that we don't receive attention & good service. Very poor & disappointing...

Osteria Sant'Angelo – a true gem in Gallipoli! We are absolutely thrilled with our experience at Osteria Sant'Angelo. From the moment we stepped in, we were welcomed with genuine warmth and incredible attention to detail. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, and you can feel the love and passion in every corner of this charming restaurant.

The owner is an amazing person — kind, thoughtful, and deeply knowledgeable about the dishes and wines. You can really tell how much he cares about making each guest feel special and at home. It’s rare to find such a combination of professionalism and heartfelt hospitality!

The food was outstanding: everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and prepared with the finest ingredients. The seafood was simply divine, and the presentation was impeccable. The wine list is impressive too, featuring an excellent selection of local and Italian wines that perfectly complement the menu.

What a wonderful find! Tucked in the narrow streets of Gallipoli’s old town, Osteria Sant’Angelo turned out to be one of the best meals of my trip. The setting is charming — stone walls, soft lighting, and that unmistakable southern Italian warmth that makes you feel instantly at home.

I started with a seafood appetizer that was as fresh as it gets, followed by homemade pasta that tasted like it came straight from a family kitchen. Everything was simple, honest, and full of flavor — exactly what good Italian cooking should be.

The staff were fantastic: friendly, attentive, and genuinely proud of what they serve. They recommended a local white wine that paired perfectly with the meal. Dessert — a classic tiramisù — was the perfect finish.
