Pizzeria Da Francesco — Restaurant in Lucca

Very local spot — we were the only tourists here! We came at 10pm with our very asleep baby and they were so welcoming. We speak four languages between us, but cannot muster up a coherent sentence in Italian, and our server had fantastic English making ordering a breeze when we were tired.

They accommodated our requests for carbonara with no meat and warned that the arrabbiata was ‘very spicy’ as we probably don’t look like spicy people (we are!) and we appreciated her knowledge and kindness. We took the arrabbiata as spaghetti instead of penne and there was no fuss whatsoever about changing the pasta. They were just down to earth. Though the (meatless) carbonara was creamy, rich and cooked perfectly, the arrabbiata the was the star, and despite how simple… sincerely so excellent.

Five of us (+ a baby) arrived about 10 minutes late for our reservation and it was not mentioned. Nice start. This restaurant (yes they serve pizza) but it is more of a restaurant with numerous rooms. We started with a couple of wonderful appetizers including meats, cheese and vegetables. We ordered a good variety of items for a good challenge of the kitchen. They performed beautifully and we all raved about our choices. With guidance from the waiter, I ordered grilled Branzino (a White and meaty fish). I'll admit I don't live deboning my own fish but maybe it made the delicious flavors even better. Fantastic pizza restaurant - unique in that they add one egg to the pizza dough. It results in a hybrid between a traditional pizza and more of a flatbread. I like crispy thinner pizzas so this was genuinely perfect for me.

The sauce, and all the toppings had so much flavour, and tasted fresh. Very good value, and even the house wine was great.

I asked for chilli and they brought me a selection of 3 very spicy chilli powders, or chilli oil (most restaurants would only have chilli oil).
