Trattoria Canuleia — Restaurant in Lucca

Cute little restaurant set in the heart of Lucca center. It has only a handful of tables in the front room which is perfect for dining indoor in colder months. But when the weather is warm the action takes place in the secluded back courtyard where they can comfortably sit about 40 people. The beautiful courtyard is secluded and being surrounded by lush trees and plants affords the space a sense of privacy and the nice feeling of being tucked away from the crowded streets of the old town center. The cuisine is in the typical lucchese/mediterrabean style but with a novel use and manipulation of the raw materials that result in very interesting, unexpected and delicious dishes. Food presentation is also excellent and that one would expect from a restaurant in a higher price range. A more than adequate wine list and an eclectic dessert menu complete what this great restaurant has to offer. We had a wonderlul time being pampered by the attentive yet never invasive stuff. To top it all off, the bill was well within the range for this type of establishment and lower than the level of quality and service would suggest. after tonight's dinner I can give this season just 2 stars. We've been there last year 2 or 3 times, all perfectly fine. Tonight it didn't went well. First they forgot the first course and wanted to serve immediately the main dish (after quite a long waiting time of appr. 50 Mins to an hour). Finally we got our first course and it was a well made pasta. The disappointment tonight for sure had been the main courses .... in our opinion (but we had no chance to talk to the chef) the main dish was originally prepared when they wanted to serve it (but they forgot the first course). Therefore they kept the main course warm in the kitchen. Again, we can not prove but really a fresh prepared fish or lamb in this restaurant is normally different. The lamb was mainly very well done instead of medium and the cod was really dry ... honestly as we've been hungry and it was already quite late we've been eating most of it. After complaining we got a Sorbetto??? Overall this time not as expected. We had our first Italian meal during our 10 days trip in Italy in this lovely restaurant. It was such a brilliant start to our family holiday with my elderly mother, my brother and sister. We ate in their garden, under a lovely marquee, just the 4 of us in a quiet and elegant atmosphere. The waiter attended to our needs straight away knowing very well everything on the menu and recommended a delicious local wine for my brother who is a connoisseur. Our 3 courses meal was really delicious and the chef and owner came twice to check if we were happy with our food, making us feel like royalty. The value for money was excellent. We had not planned to stop in Lucca as we were on our way to Bologna but this improvised dinner was a real treat. We are all food fanatics in our family having a mum who cooks really well and we talked about our meal for days following this superb dinner. Thank you very much to the entire team.
