I've found food excellence in Milan and it's at Pasta D'Autore.
I walked in 30 minutes before lunch closing but Nicholas, one of the two brothers that run this place, still greeted me with warmth and great hospitality.
Nicholas, toghether with his brother, Matteo ( blue shirt) spoke perfect English, which for a non-Italian speaker like me is really helpful (no Google translate needed).
I found out that their family had traveled abroad extensively. Work and travel has given them the opportunity to master English. Matteo loves NYC so much (5 visits) that he would someday maybe like to live there.
Ok so their family opened this restaurant 4 years ago and they were building a strong business when COVID hit. They are hunkered down for the long haul and expect to make it through the pandemic, which is great news to foodies all over the world for sure.
So part of combating the pandemic is that their kitchen is limited. Though known for their pasta, they just don't have the ability to produce the handmade pasta during COVID restrictions. Although I went there for pasta, I decided to stay for the pizza since I was already there. I'm happy I made that decision.
Prior to the pizza I had the ham mozzarella arugula appetizer shown in the pics. Talk about fresh and tasty... It was delicious, and big. Half way through the app I was wondering where the pizza was going to fit.
The Parma pizza arrived, as fresh as the appetizer. See pics.
The wine suggestion by Nicholas was excellent. I had a bottle of San Pellegrino and finished with a double espresso.
On the way out Matteo offered me not one but two limoncella shots, probably because i treated this sipping liquor as a 'shot', down the hatch style. How could I turn it down? Lol
I was so impressed with this place, these two great brothers, and the food that I am writing this unusually long and detailed post.
If you are ever in Milan, trust me this place is worth a visit and best of all the prices are very reasonable. 3 glasses of wine, a large bottle of SP, a large appetizer, pizza, and double espresso was 45 euro and I took home half the pizza so essentially that meal was for two.
I'll be back again next time I'm in Milan, which will be twice in...

We were on a quick trip to Milano and wanted to find a pasta place that we would remember forever - very ambitious plan given how many restaurants are advertising themselves as great, when they are just good or even worse. After tonight, I can say that Pasta d’Autore is THE BEST pasta place in our opinion. Super kind staff and owners, amazingly fast service and the quality of the food made our experience unforgettable. The system for ordering is quite interesting as you get to mix and match the pasta available that day with different sauces, or you can go for one of the great pizzas as well. We took the rigatoni with the sauce of the day (aubergines, tomato sauce and Parmesan) and the Raviolis Brasato (with beef filling). Following the recommendations from other clients, we also ordered the tiramisu della Nonna (which is made by the grandmother of the owners) - it was absolutely delicious, so make sure you keep a bit of space in your stomach to order it as well ;) The last info that stole my heart was that the owners are working themselves in the restaurant and take close care of their customers.
Important: due to a change in the restaurant structure, you cannot reserve a table in advance. This is not a problem at all, since they have many tables inside and you should be able to get one quite quickly if you come and request it. We arrived just before the evening opening time at 19.00, joined the queue outside the place and we were seated straight away when the restaurant opened, so that’s also an option if you like early dinners.
Summary: whenever I come back to Milano, I will definitely make sure to come to Pasta d’Autore again. Big congrats to the owners for taking such great care of...
Read moreGeneral: I’ll be honest, i’m tired of this hype places where you have to queue. Most of them are blend and unimpressive. It’s the last time i’m waisting my time with this style of dining. Always hoped i’ll hit some gold pot. People don’t have standards, education or taste nowadays. It goes the same for restaurants such as Le Relais de l’Entrecote in Paris or Osteria da Fortunata for example. Just put in place a reservation process.
Atmosphere: To get more into specifics, the atmosphere was horrible. Full of hipsters, lgbtqhdtvoled+ people, generally smelly. A lot of customers where quite badly surprised by the smell of the place when entering. I saw in some other review that some customer complained about the place being too hot. I can confirm, there is only one A/C. The tables where sticky.
Service: They were quick but quite unorganized. We had to wait like 10 minutes for the tiramisu. When you think that people wait outside it’s quite annoying, i would have preferred to leave a bit faster to let others enjoy themselves.
Food: Blend, simply nothing special. I tried both their pappardelle with “parmesan cream” which were almost watery and not tasty and had as well their “famous” and special ravioli’s. They were at maximum OK. No food orgasm unfortunately as some...
