Trattoria San Pietro — Restaurant in Modena

i can’t even really describe to you what this meal meant to me. it was so random, i just found a trattoria with high ratings on google and booked for the evening on a saturday which happened to be a holiday, so i was nervous we wouldn’t get a table. but we did!

this is like a scaled-down italian St John (London restaurant). it is exactly my taste. i understand how the rest of my family did not share in my ecstasy because i just think this restaurant was made for me and people like me. it’s quaint, cozy, the meals are rustic and traditional, it’s run by a sweet old gentleman, and everything is served in a random order. i also just adore the red and white tablecloths.

the parmesan flan was divine, so soft and creamy like a gorgeous fluffy pudding with a cheesy flavour paired well with good balsamico.

the tortellini with ricotta was just perfect, so was the gramigna. maybe the best pasta i’ve had in Italy thus far. both dishes were so densely packed with flavour!

the absolute highlight was boiled meats, which is such a comfort meal. it’s simple but the meat is of good quality and tender. i loved the sausages, i loved everything, and the condiments to pair… it sang to my heart. sweet, acidic, so rustic and homely. and the balsamico pickled onions!!!!! i literally devoured a whole portion by myself.

the zuppa inglese for dessert was okay but it just isn’t my style of pudding, i just wanted to try it. the panacotta was way better, very nice texture and vanilla flavour.

i thought the meal was so sweet and comforting, it made me so happy. i want to go back to Modena...

Cercando un posto adatto per il pranzo di Pasqua, siamo capitati in questo piccolo e modesto locale, a Sud-Est del centro storico di Modena, in una via un po' nascosta. Appena entrati abbiamo notato il modo in cui era organizzato il ristorante: deliziosamente ordinato e con le pareti dipinte in un grigio acquoso. Interessante notare le simpatiche "lampade" ricavati da tubi del gas e acqua. Il personale è molto educato e gentile, soprattutto il titolare, amichevole e un po' esuberante. Per mangiare abbiamo optato per il menù fisso e de facto era già stato tutto stabilito; cibo veramente buono e fatto in maniera decisamente tradizionale: come antipasto, ci hanno portato una polenta cotta al forno e con una spolverata di parmigiano tutt' intero, delicata ma non mi ha conquistato molto. Ho, invece, apprezzato tanto i tortellini in brodo (sempre di Cappone) che il titolare è venuto direttamente a distribuirci nelle scodelle (per ben 2 volte poi, per una seconda valutazione), buonissimi e con un po' di parmigiano prendono un sapore forte e intenso che ti circonda tutto il palato. Meno le girelle di pasta con formaggio e prosciutto ma se non altro sono state apprezzate dagli altri. Molto buone, poi, le patate al forno, rosolate e croccanti, servite con salsicce e agnello "alle erbe" (cioè basilico; era talmente buono che mi sono persino dimenticato di fotografarlo), da rimangiare assolutamente. Per dessert, erano state messe tre fette di una morbidissima Colomba (era così buona che abbiamo chiesto se era possibile comprarne una al banco) accompagnate con mascarpone e pezzetti di cioccolato fondente, un successo. Terminato con un forte caffè- Deka e con una sazietà anche troppo evidente...uff! Concludendo questo messaggio direi che, si mangia bene, la qualità è alta e il posto è in un bel edificio...

We happened upon this place during a day trip to Modena. Did not have reservations, but we got there just as they were opening for lunch and they fit us in. Highly recommend making reservations. Food was delicious! The Parmesan flan (appetizer) was to die for! The menu on the window outside had a risotto dish that I wanted to try but it wasn’t on the menu inside. The chef made it for me anyway and it was delicious. Pana cotta for dessert, OMG! The whole meal was perfect, soup to nuts! Service was extremely friendly! ...
