Do not visit if you are a tourist, or at least negotiate the price up front (if you speak Italian). We enjoyed our meal and experience up until it was time to pay. The long and short is we payed 40 euro for an humble meal (more below). They don’t speak English so we didn’t have any way of arguing or negotiating. It felt quite predatory and disrespectful.
We arrived and waited outside for perhaps 10 min. In that time a gentleman, presumably a local, strolled up and was seated right away. I’m ok with that as it’s clearly a locals place. Watching three generations whirl around in the cramped space was entertaining and felt authentic. The food was humble but well seasoned. I saw other reviews mention three courses but ours was only two. I got the lentil soup and two meatballs the size of golf balls. My wife got a small plata of tomatoes and green beans and a ball of mozzarella. We shared two slices of bread and a water. That’s it. 40euro. We had some glorious meals including multiple drinks in Napoli for the same or less. There was a family of 5 eating beside us, and there’s now way they paid 100 euro for that. It’s sad that our experience was ruined by their predatory practices. Eventually the reviews will catch up with them and tourists will stop coming, but perhaps...
Read moreIf you want a taste of a true Italian Osteria in this part of Naples, this is it; rustic, homely, and no nonsense, just good home cooked Italian food. Run by a charming old man who refuses to retire and his daughter, we came here thinking there would be a full menu to choose from but the waitress, presumably the owner's daughter, told us we had two choices of Primo. We had little choice which made it easy. There were 3 choices of Secondi. We both had pasta Genovese to start and I had the marinated anchovies for secondi and my partner had the mozzarella. They were served with a side of fried courgette, peppers, aubergine and boiled and lightly fried carrot. The pasta Genovese was nice, nothing amazing but this is simple food. The marinated anchovies however when paired with the vegetables and bread was just amazingly yummy. I couldn't believe how much flavour was coming from something so simple as the veg and the fish. Seeing the old man shuffle around tending to customers and the customers, some of whom looked like they had been eating their for 70 years, enjoying the food in this simple place was really a lovely little experience. Definitely recommended if you want the genuine article. This is how...
Read moreIf you’re on the hunt for authentic Neopolitan food in a down-home atmosphere, check out Osteria Donna Teresa in the Vomero neighborhood of Naples. This tiny family-run eatery has been in business since 1913. It is far from fancy, but the food is delicious and the atmosphere is warm. There are only 8 tables and there is no printed menu. Your server will tell you your two choices for a primi and your meat or fish choices for secondi. I had a bowl of lentil soup followed by pork rotolo. Husband had rice with vegetables followed by roasted fish with potatoes. We were also served a big plate of roasted veggies (melanzane, broccoli, spinach, zucchini, carrots) and a basket of bread to share. We asked about the dulce menu and were served a piece of traditional Neopolitan pastiera —delicious! All this food plus a 1/2 bottle of house wine and a big bottle of water came to €40. Again: there is nothing fancy about this place —it’s like eating at grandma’s house (and not in a holiday), but the food was fantastic! Highly recommend for...
