The Penny Black — Restaurant in Naples

We visited this place fairly early around 8 p.m., so although it was already busy, we didn’t have to wait for a table. The atmosphere is nice enough, but the tables are quite small and a bit cramped.

The service, however, was not ideal. Our sides (fries and onion rings) arrived about 20 minutes before the burgers, which made the meal feel disjointed. I had the brisket burger, which cost €16. It wasn’t particularly large, and the taste was just okay – definitely not worth the price. Beer is also very expensive, ranging from €6.50 to €9.

On top of that, a mandatory 15% service charge is added to the bill, which feels quite unfair since tipping should be voluntary. All in all, you won’t get out of here for less than €30 per person, and for what you get, the value simply...

Bene ma non benissimo. Premetto subito che la qualità del cibo è ottima, da 5 stelle. Le mie 4 stelle sono dovute esclusivamente al servizio. Spiego perché.

Il locale ha uno stile di pub d'oltremanica, con la postazione della cassa a forma di cabina telefonica rossa tipica della capitale Inglese. Molto caratteristico e bello negli arredamenti e nei colori. Anche i bagni molto curati.

Mi siedo (da solo) al tavolo accompagnato dal cameriere.

Un altro cameriere mi porta la tovaglietta, le posate e il menù senza chiedermi se nel frattempo voglio ordinare qualcosa da bere.

Arriva un'altra che penso sia una sorta di supervisore e che mi spiega niente di più di quello che già c'è scritto sul menù. Senza chiedermi cosa voglio da bere.

Decido di ordinare. Arriva di nuovo lei. Ordino come antipasto una bruschetta irpina e come panini un Miss Mortadella, più la birra e una bottiglia d'acqua.

Dopo un po' mi arriva la bruschetta e nemmeno dopo due minuti anche il panino con mio immenso stupore. La supervisore se ne accorge portandomi via il panino e mettendmelo in caldo.

Bruschetta ottima, panino pure. Ottimo gli ingredienti, ottima la cottura, ottimi gli abbinamenti fra ingredienti.

I dessert sono vari e alcuni di questi molto allettanti, come il cantamisù fatto con cantucci bagnati nel vinsanto che non ho provato. Sono andato di tiramisù: nella norma.

Ho chiesto spiegazioni per questa anomalia nella consegna dei piatti, mi ê stato detto che dato che mancava il capocuoco, c'è stata confusione in cucina. In un pub con quella storia e con quel nome queste cose non dovrebbero accadere mai.

Ci ritornerò? Forse sì, ma dovrà passare del tempo perché non mi sembra di aver vissuto...

Interesting drinks selections. However beware that while your small glass of beer is 6 euros (we had two) the final charge requested was 13 euros. I asked before buying as the barman was eager to put us on a tab. Maybe a tourist trap but the barman was happy to accept 12 euros when challenged. It's not very English as I could not see anything English on draft. One to avoid unless you are a local. Also the guy on the door was pushy about where your *allowed to sit. Never had that in an...
