aTipico — Restaurant in Palermo

Unfortunately it didn't live up to our expectations. The "indeciso" starter was kinda good (especially the arrosticini!), but 70% of it was chips - not exactly a representative sample of the wonderful small bites Sicily has to offer. The spaghetti al nero were ok, if a bit on the heavy side. The paccheri were the biggest disappointment. I was expecting a burst of sea flavour, nuanced yet intense. I got a mild hint of parsley/seaweed accompanied by flavourless ground nuts and no top notes whatsoever. The kitchen had run out of chili strings and lemon zest to top the dish, but instead of telling me, they just served the dish without it, as if hoping I wouldn't notice. That's bad practice, and to be honest a spicy kick could really have brought the dish to life. The food is excellent, everything is good quality. Unfortunately I have to say, be aware for additional things added to your bill without asking such as TAP water (that is always free except for here) and a bread basket nobody ever asked for. The service itself is horrendous. We were not allowed to sit except for the high tables due to reservations but throughout our dinner, nobody claimed those places. Reservations? Where? I got the tofu carbonara and it was fantastic. The tofu was smoky and crispy, great eggy flavour owing to the black salt. The flavours were quite intense but it still somehow worked. The prices are very reasonable, especially for vegan food which cannot be found anywhere else. The service was great, friendly and speedy, and the restaurant itself is gorgeous! Also look at how cute the cutlery holders are!!!! They know how to pay attention to the details here, in the food and the deco.
