During our recent trip to Rome, we stumbled upon Pop's Roma through Google reviews. Encouraged by its high ratings but cautious due to prior disappointments with other well-reviewed cafés, we decided to give it a try for breakfast. To our delight, Pop's Roma truly delivered on its promise!
Food & Coffee
Our breakfast was freshly prepared with meticulous care, evident in both presentation and taste. The coffees were exceptional. We ordered black Americanos and espresso lungo, and I must highlight this: it was the only café in Rome where the espresso lungo was served correctly. Elsewhere, it was mistakenly served as regular espresso.
The barista, a middle-aged gentleman, showcased his craftsmanship with every cup. Serving coffee black leaves no room for error, and his work was flawless. The quality shone through—no "masking" needed with milk or sweeteners. Kudos to him for such mastery!
The Carrot Cake – A Masterpiece
Now, let’s talk about the carrot cake. Oh. My. Goodness. It was phenomenal! As someone who loves carrot cake and orders it wherever possible, I can confidently say this was the best carrot cake I have ever had. The sponge was soft and velvety, packed with a generous amount of walnuts, and topped with buttercream (or cream cheese?) icing that was perfectly textured and flavoured.
It was so good, I returned the very next morning for another slice. Admittedly, at €8 per piece, it’s on the pricier side, but one bite is enough to convince you it’s worth every cent.
Final Thoughts
If I ever find myself in Rome again, I would happily walk across the entire city just to have coffee and cake at Pop's Roma. The quality, care, and flavors made it a highlight of our trip. Highly recommended!
Edit: For some reason Google is not allowing me to set 5-star to Food, Service, Atomsphere; it resets to 0 which is frustrating. As a result I have set all to 4, but in reality I'd have...
Read moreWe stayed at Le Meridien Visconti Rome and this cute diner is right opposite. On our first morning we visited and even though we didn’t have a reservation, staff were welcoming and quickly accommodated us. They mentioned we could only have the table for one hour as there was a reservation but that suited us just fine.
Good varied menu with a mix of sweet and savoury dishes to suit different tastes. Prices are reasonable and portions are good. Lovely range of cakes on display - I wish I had taken more photos. Croissants were super light and tasted so good. French toast was lush and the buttermilk chicken burger was tasty. Great coffee too and a rich hot chocolate with more cream than I’ve ever seen. Service was very friendly.
We liked this place so much we came back for brunch the next day and the staff remembered us which was nice.
Lovely spot for breakfast, brunch or lunch. They are open in the evening but we didn’t visit at this time so don’t know if there is a different menu but they do serve cocktails. We would definitely...
Read moreThis was the first restaurant in Italy, after 2 weeks of travel, that we were treated poorly just because we are Americans. Started by giving us the worst table, even though there were many other available; we asked for a different table but host said "no" - of course, they gave these booths/tables to locals after our arrival! Then after serving the food we had little service, had to ask for salt, pepper and ketchup and it took several minutes, while our food got cold. The locals all got good service while we were overlooked. I asked for more ketchup, never got any, then had to go to the counter for some and he gave me BBQ sauce; when I asked for ketchup, "Pop" gave me a cold stare and gave me one packet. The cheeseburger was okay, not lettuce or tomato or toppings, just meat on a bun. Not going back and we'd suggest other travelers...
