Now that we're back from Italy, my travel companion and I are confident in saying that Gelateria La Romana was our favorite Italian gelato experience. We ended up going three times and trying several of the flavors. All were delicious! We tried non-vegan and vegan flavors. They were equally amazing! If you're a tourist, consider the following: Unlike other gelaterias, the gelatos aren't on display. But, I assure you that they're quite pretty in appearance when scooped into your cone or cup. And the colors and flavors appear to be completely natural. You won't get a scoop of some gross, fluorescent goop here! Also, it's worth your while to have the company website up on your phone so that you can see the English menu, as this store's menu is entirely in Italian. Even if you're familiar with some of the Italian words for the more common gelato flavors, Gelateria La Romana has some unusual flavors too that you probably haven't seen at some of the other gelaterias that you may have visited. Also, be prepared to eat your gelato elsewhere. There isn't much room here. Also, there are some small cakes in the glass case on the opposite end from where the register is. Look these over first if you think you might want cake, as you must first pay for everything at the register and, if you don't make a point of stopping to look, you won't even notice the cakes until you've already cashed out. Lastly, order a size of gelato larger than small. There's something about these delicious gelatos that leaves a person wanting more! So you may as well at least get a medium and not feel regretful that you only...

Our gelato “barista,” Beatrix, was very friendly and helpful, offering us her favorite flavors to try. She gave us generous scoops of what was the most delicious gelato I’ve ever had.
*Lots of incredible options for dairy-free people (like myself)! I got the Blueberry/Huckleberry and Chocolate Chips dairy free gelato, and Ecuadorian Dark Chocolate dairy free gelato. Both were out of this world. My friend got Hazlenut and Coffee flavors, which she loved.
There are a few rules when traveling in Rome, and the first is to never pay more than €4 for a medium gelato (three scoops / flavors). If you’re paying more than that, you’re getting scammed. Any legitimate gelato place will be very affordable, are usually far from any of the tourist attractions, and the flavors will be written in Italian - this place fits all of the above!
It was hard to communicate at times because all the workers spoke only Italian, (and the flavors were in Italian) but that just added to the authenticity. We used Google Translate and it worked like a charm :)
Be smart about your gelato in Rome (don’t overpay!) and try new...
Read moreIt tastes heavy, other than that the staff is just simply rude to the customers. Edit: Let me explain it to you then. After we paid for our ice cream. We went to the line to get our ice cream. The staff there was a black lady. We asked her which flavor was her recommendation. She yelled at us "Go pay for it first. Get out of the line!" She started waving her hands to shoo us. We were have been to many countries and never received such rude behavior. We were in shock told her we already paid for the ice cream and gave her the receipt. She angrily snatched the receipt from my hand and said "Now tell me what you want." We asked her "Which flavor is the most popular?" She again yelled "Just say what you want!". We randomly choose two flavors and she pushed the cup in front of us as if she is feeding her dogs. We realized she was acting the same way to other tourists behind us as well, especially to asian tourists, while she was acting normal to Italian costumers. The flavors we randomly choose were some dark heavy chocolate one and the lemon one. The lemon one was fine. The dark chocolate one was like butter mousse with...
