Wonderful! A good friend who can be trusted for recommendations on food and travel suggested Ad Hoc. We sent in the reservation form late at night and received a confirmation the next day. Upon arrival we discovered a beautiful restaurant where the wine list is the walls (they have an actual printed list, too) in a modern and chic but still Italian style setting. Tables a comfortable distance apart (for a change) added to a sense of privacy and aided the dinner conversion. On our friend’s advice we did the truffle tasting menu and were not disappointed! We were also pleased that they allowed a couple of dietary substitutions (not common) and that we need not all be on the same testing menu (our 15-year old daughter chose ala carte). Each course came in dishes of two or three. We chose the wine pairings and enjoyed their selections (while I do wish Italian restaurants would not serve red wines at room temperature, it seems the common practice). The staff was very friendly and the service was at a high standard. We had essentially 3 different servers waiting us and they did not miss a beat. We had an 8.30 table and were one of the last to leave. We did not ever feel rushed nor was the service ever slow. Perhaps just a tad faster than standard Italian dining it felt like to us. Net net, all four of us, including our daughter who does not favor high cuisine very much, all greatly enjoyed it and highly recommend it. For context, our other meals in Rome were at Vanda (very good!) and Alfredo’s (great experience even if not the best food) and on a food excellence Ad Hoc was superb, the service as high as we could have hoped for, and the atmosphere — more modern but not overly so — a perfect compliment to the other experiences. One tip would be maybe to consider asking for the outdoor patio overlooking the Circus Maximus. You would need to request it with your booking. I say “maybe” because while the patio is lovely, the interior is quite beautiful and perhaps the better choice if you’ve had ample outdoor dining already. Also note that for a truffle tasting with...

Found the Ad Hoc restaurant by coincidence on Trip Advisor, where I read some good reviews. I booked a table, for my sister, my father and my 3 kids (daughters 17 & 15, and my son of 15). It was worth every penny and second of my time. It was well above all our expectations. From start to finish we were treated as VIP’s. What a beautiful experience. The waitress took all our orders without writing anything down and memorized it all by heart. Whenever a water glass was nearly empty, it was automatically refilled. We ordered a beautiful Pinot Grigio, which was being kept in the wine fridge to keep it at optimum temperature, and again our glasses were topped up automatically once it was almost empty, by the always alert waitresses. I have rarely seen any better service in my life. The food was fantastic, and so was the selection of wines. We were welcomed with a glass of Prosecco from the house, and in between our starter-, main course & desert, we got served with delicious intermediate dishes from the house. I have been in quite a few Michelin restaurants, and am truly surprised that this restaurant doesn’t have one (yet). From the menu, the wines, the service, the ambiance, the location, the interior to the superb quality of the food, can all only be described and rated as 5 star plus. The biggest surprise was the bill at the end of our evening, which was almost half the amount of what we were all expecting. I truly hope that this restaurant can survive on these prices and keep the outstanding quality, service and high standards as I have experienced. Before we left, all the ladies were gifted a goody bag with a bottle of their own home made olive oil. I wish I could find a restaurant with such high standards and these affordable prices somewhere closer to home, because then I would be a regular guest. I will definitely visit this restaurant again when I come back to Rome. This was one of the highlights of our...

Beautiful place but mediocre food experience. Avoid this disappointing attempt at a high-end truffle dining experience. Every dish in the menu arrived cold and the overcomplicated wine pairing — a different wine with every dish — felt excessive and left us with terrible hangovers rather than enjoyment.

The main course was a complete disaster — poorly executed, lacking balance, and far below expectations for the price point. This is NOT fine dining. The cooks south Asian and north African decent lack training and can be found in many areas or touristic restaurants across Rome.

The service was initially well received but very opinionated and arrogant where as another waitress was shockingly rude and confrontational. We were celebrating a birthday, and this clearly unstable waitress escalated a situation into a full-blown argument, even accusing us of insulting staff in multiple languages — an absurd and baseless claim. What should have been a special evening ended in disaster.

To top it off, after a €300 bill, they offered us a complimentary drink — which was later sneakily added as an extra charge.

In over 20 years of dining in top restaurants around the world, we’ve never encountered such unprofessionalism and disrespect. Do yourself a favor: skip this place and opt for a genuine Roman dining experience or a reputable Michelin-starred restaurant instead.

I hope the manager that I had a lengthy conversation with turns this place around and rethinks her strategy to bring order , discipline and high end dining to this Restaurant.

Also, take a look at other reviews — these issues seem far...

Walked here with my spouse following our tour of the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill. We were hungry and ready to eat. We had reservations for the first available slot of the evening. Surprisingly, the restaurant wasn’t very busy during the 2 hours we were there. Great ambiance, as expected of fine dining. Service was top notch. We had several servers and they were always pleasant. The staff even arranged for taxi after our dinner. I had the tasting menu (sea) with wine pairing, while my spouse had a la carte. Food was very good. However, the portions were a bit large and I overestimated my appetite. I cleaned my appetizer plate, which was comprised of 3 separate items: grilled octopus, smoked salmon, and fried cod. The pasta course included 2 items: ravioli stuffed with smoked salmon, and spaghetti with octopus. I also cleaned this plate. By now, I was full. Really full. What was officially 2 courses were actually 5 dishes. The third course was comprised of 2 main dishes: sea bass and mushrooms rolled in zucchini, and some other fish item. Both were good but I had to force myself to eat 1/3 to 1/2 of the entree. This detracted from my enjoyment. By this point, I can barely touch the wine. Dessert was cheesecake. Solid. Tasting menu with wine was only 95 euros!! A similar meal and service in the US would have costed me 300 USD. My spouse has grilled octopus for appetizer, followed by cubed carbonara, beef fillet, and a glass of wine.
