Il Masgalano Ristorante Pizzeria — Restaurant in Siena

I have been to Siena many times and did a "soggiorno" here back in 2004 as a student at University of Oregon. Every time I've been back to Siena to visit friends I met back I the day, I come for a wonderful pranzo or dinner or just a lovely glass if some Vino and enjoy the terrace. The food is excellent, where haute cuisine and home style out of nonna's kitchen cross paths, and the price is right. They have añ amazing wine selection, and for the beer enthusiasts, a good selection of artisan crafted brews (and I'm FROM Portland, Or. Born and raised, used to work at Lucky Lab brewery so I know my birre). The ambience is the cherry on top: ad you enter the town, before you make your descent into the main piazza "IL Campo" you have this lovely Masgalano right at the entrance, and the terrace has a view that is mind blowing, San Domenico's imposing and enchanting facade is 100 yards from the terrace. The fellow who runs the place Guiseppe also speaks English, as do others who work there, so they accommodate those of us are scambling to find some expressions in our language travel guide book. Come perdere dei clienti in una sola battuta... Il personale di questo ristorante ci sa fare davvero con i nuovi clienti. È sabato pomeriggio, sono già le 14:30 e, dopo una lunga passeggiata in centro, decidiamo di entrare in questo locale scoperto per caso. Il personale sembra un po' distratto, ma chiediamo se possiamo sederci ad un tavolo e un ragazzo ci fa accomodare. Diamo un'occhiata al menù e ordiniamo. Nel frattempo arrivano altre persone; sono turisti stranieri. Seduti accanto al nostro tavolo ci sono una coppia e una famiglia, anche loro sono turisti stranieri. Mio marito chiede cortesemente al cameriere se è possibile usare la toilette. Il ragazzo gli risponde che nella zona ci sono tanti bagni pubblici e indica la piazza di fronte dove, effettivamente, c'è un cartello in bella vista con la scritta Bagni pubblici... Poi, molto probabilmente, accortosi dell'espressione attonita sul volto di mio marito, cerca di rimediare farfugliando una frase che suona come "in fondo a destra" che lascia piuttosto perplessa anche me, perché i bagni pubblici sono davvero là, nella piazza, in fondo a destra... Francamente ci è sembrata una risposta piuttosto infelice e abbiamo deciso di andarcene dicendo al simpatico cameriere che, vista l'estrema cortesia con la quale eravamo stati accolti, preferivamo cercare un locale dove il personale fosse un po' più attento ai clienti e dove fosse possibile usare anche la toilette... Lui ha tentato goffamente di scusarsi affermando che si trattava di una battuta, ma avrei voluto vedere la sua faccia se la battuta gliela avessimo fatta noi al momento di pagare il conto... Speriamo che trovi dei clienti che capiscano le sue battute. Io gli consiglio di trovare un altro modo per accoglierli, altrimenti sarebbe meglio che cercasse un altro lavoro... Magari come comico. Se decidete di fermarvi in questo posto a pranzo o a cena, fatevi spiegare anche le battute oltre ai piatti che servono, oltretutto...

We first visited 5 years ago and loved the spicy pizza. So we decided to return on our 2024 trip with friends & everyone agreed the pizza was the best we’ve had in Italy!! Our service was one of the quickest we’ve had during our visits. 3 of us had a Rossini which was refreshing on a warm day while the remaining group had some stellar Brunello recommended by our waiter. We ultimately had 3 variations of pizzas but the group still decided the spicy version was the best! Bathrooms were clean and as a visitor I’d definitely recommend...
