Trattoria Tropeana — Restaurant in Tropea

We went to mass on a Sunday evening at the beautiful Cattedrale di Maria Santissima di Romania in the historic center in Tropea. After mass, we asked a nice gentleman there if he could recommend a little place to eat seafood. He brought us directly to Trattoria Tropeana, a few steps away from the cathedral on a quaint, paved stone alley. We were greeted with a warm welcome and the host Giuseppe sat us at a table outside. The table was beautifully arranged with a small lamp that set a romantic mood. The food was absolutely fresh and delicious. My wife and I selected dishes for three courses and shared each: Tropeana hot and cold seafood appetizer platter; spaghetti with cipolla rossa di Tropea; fresh grilled tuna steak with cipolla di Tropea. As an accompaniment with the tuna, we had a salad of tomatoes, Tropea onions and olives. For the meal we had a bottle of the house white wine, locally sourced, and it was wonderful. The food was amazing, prepared beautifully and served with such care by our waitress Mara, who was incredibly kind, friendly and cheerful. She was very attentive to us. Mara recommended that we finish with a digestif of peperoncino and bergamot - so delicious. What a wonderful dinner and evening! This is an amazing exceptional restaurant worthy of its high rating on Google Maps. I ended up here because another local place turned me away rather rudely. So glad that happened because I ended up here and everything was perfect. My gin tonic was generous and strong. I had the spaghetti alla vongole and Gamberoni Grigliate. I love the clams in Italy, they are so savory. The thing that made the prawns so exceptional was how tender they were. Perfetto. Nice touch bringing my half bottle of Lunapiena on ice. Classy. Wir wollten zu dritt nur eine Kleinigkeit essen und hatten uns daher für die Parmigiana entschieden. Alle Gerichte waren von unterschiedlicher Qualität und Zubereitung, wobei zwei gerade noch als Parmigiana in der aller untersten Kategorie bezeichnet werden konnten, weil sie zumindest etwas gewürzt waren. Ich hatte auch noch das „Glück“, das bei mir jegliches Gewürz fehlte, die zwei Scheiben Auberginen und drei Scheiben Tomaten mit einem Hach von Käse absolut in einem Wasserbett lagen und so etwas von matschig schmeckten, dass man es sich kaum vorstellen kann. Von entwässern und Salzen vorher kann hier keine Rede sein. Überbacken war keines der Gerichte. Vermutlich in der Microwelle auf höchster Stufe erwärmt, was den hohen Wassergehalt erklärt. Für das Brot vorab, welches ungefragt serviert wurde, wurden pro Person 3 EUR für zwei kleine Scheiben Weißbrot ausgewiesen. Die oben erwähnte Frechheit wird immerhin mit 12 Euro zu Buche schlagen und diese bei einem Warenwert von nicht mal einem EUR pro Person. Bei richtiger Zubereitung wäre dieser Preis aufgrund der Arbeitszeit sogar zu rechtfertigen. Ich weiß, wovon ich spreche, da ich bereits hundertfach dieses Gericht auch in originalen Abwandlungen zubereitet habe. Ich fühlte mich bei der, trotz Allem, netten Bedienung, wie in einem Schnellimbiss. Wein- und Getränke Empfehlungen wurden, oder konnten nicht gegeben werden. Mein Essen wurde nicht mit auf die Rechnung gesetzt und somit verblieben für ca. 5 Scheiben Aubergine, 6 Scheiben Tomaten, kalte Tomatensoße, etwas Gewürz und vielleicht Olivenöl mit einem Wasser, einem Weißwein, bestellt war ein Rosé und einem kleinem Bier immerhin schlappe 45 Euro auf der Rechnung. Fazit: Schönes Ambiente, keine adäquate Leistung und ein viel zu hoher Preis, zumindest für dieses Gericht Kaltes kleines Essen, ohne Entschuldigung Hier ist einiges im Argen.
