Review of Illy Coffee in Montepulciano: Sensitivity Matters

During my recent visit to Montepulciano, I ordered an espresso that was served in an Illy coffee cup featuring the phrase "Foreigners Everywhere." While I understand this design is part of the illy Art Collection, linked to the Venice Biennale, it felt rather inappropriate in a context like a local café.

As Australian tourists, we strive to appreciate and respect the culture of the places we visit. However, being served coffee in a cup with a message that seemed to highlight our status as outsiders felt uncomfortable. It came across as a slight, especially in a town known for its hospitality and warmth.

I believe that while such art may have a place in exhibitions, coffee cups in daily service should be mindful of cultural sensitivity. My colleague shared the same sentiment, feeling that this was a tone-deaf gesture towards international visitors.

Illy is a globally respected brand, and I hope they reconsider the appropriateness of such messages in commercial settings. Cultural inclusivity and sensitivity should be at the forefront, especially in the hospitality industry.

The gentleman, servicing was ever so polite and attentive. A beautiful store.

Not the best service we have experienced in Italy so far. Didn’t really feel welcomed right from the start but we wanted a drink and to rest before continuing our walk so settled on this less than mediocre establishment.

The fancier it looks the lousier...

Llegué a este lugar únicamente para probar un par de panecillos.

Ordené un cappuccino, 3 diferentes tipos de cornetos y una dona dulce con relleno de crema. Para mi sorpresa todo tenía un sabor muy rico.

Es un lugar familiar y muy agradable.

Apto para niños.

Tienen mesas en interior.

Hay una área en donde está un piano, el techo de esa zona es muy bello.

La decoración del lugar es agradable.

Si tienes movilidad reducida y/o vas en silla de ruedas, te comento que el acceso y movilidad dentro del lugar es de dificultad media. No cuentan con rampa de acceso en la entrada.

El lugar se encontraba visiblemente limpio.

La atención fue buena.

El servicio fue rápido.
