Taverna Barababao — Restaurant in Venice

I'm not sure what happened with the chef on the night of our visit but the food in my opinion was barely edible. Frozen, extremely overcooked, and not fresh pasta... We ordered grilled chicken which was tough as nails and about half couldn't even be eaten because it was impossible to chew, lobster pasta which was frozen lobster overcooked dry and one bite my son gave me I actually pulled a Gordon Ramsay (spit it out it was so bad), mixed grilled fish platter for two which was mostly overcooked except for the one fresh whole fish on the plate that was pretty good, a salad that was ok, and spaghetti pomodoro which was was very much made with canned sauce and dried pasta.

2 stars because the service was still good and the one piece of fish which was fresh.

Located on a quiet corner in Canareggio, this taverna feels out of the way and local. Dining here feels like theatre. Vasile, the host, finishes plates at the counter, linking kitchen and diners with a flourish. Our filetto di rombo al forno (baked turbot with potatoes and artichokes) was perfectly cooked - clean, meaty fillets, lifted by earthy vegetables. A solid 8/10, though a crisp element would have sharpened the dish. Fritto misto dell’Adriatico was fresh and delicate, if under-seasoned (7.5/10). My wife and I were greeted like old friends arriving. We were promptly seated with a smile from our server. Some aqua frizzante (sparkling water) and a bottle of red wine to start, the exquisite bruschetta and a few mispronounced Italian words on my part got us all laughing and joking together in broken English and my poor Italian! My wife an I split the (Gnocchi con Granchio e Pomodoro) Crab Meat Gnocchi with Cherri Tomatoes. We could have probably each ordered our own portion because it was so delicious, but I would have hated myself afterward. Finishing with a light crisp salad with oil and vinegar was perfect.
