Osteria dei Poeti Volterra — Restaurant in Volterra

This restaurant has a bar out front but if you walk down the hallway to the back it opens into a quaint little spot with about 6 or 7 tables. The food and service here were both excellent. The waitress took care of us but was not overbearing. We had a couple of appetizers here - selection of pecorino cheese and the fried ricotta; both were really good and were large portions. We mostly skipped pasta this evening and had secondi. The two steaks at the table were cooked to a very nice rare-mid-rare and were flavorful and tender. I also had the wild boar which was really good. The wine list is OK and the prices were a tad high(although not bad for a tourist area) but overall a really great experience. ...

Coffee and aperitivi We dropped into the bar in front of the Osteria for a post lunch coffee with panforte and pan pepato. The staff behind the counter were lovely - the coffees were terrific and we really enjoyed the panforte and pan pepato, so we came back for pre-dinner drinks (aperitivi). We really enjoyed the aperitivi and the staff were really nice about explaining how to make the drinks. This is a really great spot for coffee...

Wij werden zeer gastvrij ontvangen. Daar wij de afgelopen twee jaar hier uitstekend hadden gegeten waren de verwachtingen hoog gespannen. Als antipasti hadden wij de carpaccio. Die van mij was prima maar die van mijn echtgenote was veel te dik gesneden. De primi Tortellini was op zich prima. Een beetje te al dente maar de smaak was goed. De grote teleurstelling was de secondi. Mijn vrouw had de vis van de dag de tonijn. Deze werd ingepakt in aluminiumfolie op het bord geserveerd. Vervolgens werd er een flinke scheut olijfolie overheen gedaan. De tonijn had geen smaak. Zelf had ik de kabeljauw, calamares en garnalen tempura met seizoensgroenten en tartaarsaus. Tot mijn grote verbazing was echt alles in tempura gefrituurd. Zelfs de groenten. Ik heb maar een klein beetje ervan gegeten want na een aantal happen brak het mij al op. Dat het niet gesmaakt heeft heb ik aan de vriendelijke serveerster doorgegeven die het aan de chef zou vertellen. Niets meer van gehoord. Als dessert had ik de Mille foglio. Deze bestond uit wat bladerdeeg met vanillesaus en een paar plakjes aardbei. Dit is niet hoe ik dit dessert eerder bij diverse restaurants heb gekregen. Al met al een teleurstelling daar wij de afgelopen twee jaar veel beter eten geserveerd hebben gekregen. De rekening van €139 was het absoluut niet waard. Helaas wij hadden op...
