Visiting A&W in Okinawa is always a nostalgic treat. It’s more than just fast food—it’s a part of Okinawa’s unique local culture. The vibe is retro and cozy, with some locations offering drive-in service that feels like stepping back in time.

I love their signature root beer float, which is a must-try, especially on a hot Okinawan day. The taste is authentic and refreshing, and they even let you refill root beer—something rare in Japan! Their Mozza Burger and curly fries are also my go-to favorites. The burger is juicy with rich cheese and sauce, and the fries are crispy with a nice seasoning.

Compared to regular fast food chains, A&W feels more local and laid-back, perfect for taking a break during a road trip around Okinawa. Prices are reasonable, and service is always friendly.

So maybe this is a hit with Okinawa/Japan but for a me, the food was just okay. The “burgers” are not 100% beef…there is NO WAY. It’s either a tofu burger or soybean/beef or Pork mix. Different texture to the meat and very light in color compared to 100% beef. We got two hamburgers and a “Melty Double.”

The “Super Fries” are also processed somehow; almost like a fried, coated mashed potato. The curly fries and onion rings seemed the most “normal.” Root beer was good. Clean resto and friendly staff, just not what I was expecting. Again, probably fits a niche well here locally, just not for me.

So it wasn’t terrible, but it’s not the same as an A&W in the US…or any other all-beef hamburger place I’ve been to—maybe that’s why they call them “burgers” and not...

Almost everything from the lighting, to the atmosphere, to services (waitresses), to the taste was dissatisfactory. As soon as I step foot into the store, I'm greeted with unhappy waitresses who seem impatient and tired. I order from the menu, and they mumble something (which I realized later that they were telling me to wait at the table). A few minutes later, I get the food (6 different hamburgers and sandwiches, 3 drinks, and 3 types of fries), but they are all bland or too sweet.
