Restaurant Marushige — Restaurant in Fujikawaguchiko

The female waitress was superbly RUDE!! She pointed to a sign that said no English speaking staff, so I have to speak Japanese. That was fine by me as I have google translate.

Irony is that they are playing English songs when they don’t speak English! HUH!

I told her table for 2, it was me alone. My husband was going to join me later. She did this 🙅🏻‍♀️ reserve. I used google translate to tell her, table for 1. She said something in Japanese which I didn’t comprehend. I saw a guy eating alone, so I can dine alone yes? I moved to sit at a table with 4 chairs, she started shouting. I should have left at this point, really!

She wanted me to wait till the single diner finished then she let me sit at his table. Right… she pointed to the steak set lunch. I ordered that to not stir up anymore trouble.

Later I saw 2 other tables ordering food that was not the steak menu! Right… 🙄

This is the ONLY place where I’ve experienced a Japanese being SOOOO RUDE! DONT EVER COME...

To clarify some travelers’ concerns in previous reviews: I speak some Japanese, so on coming in for lunch, was treated very well. This place appears to be popular with locals and had many locals coming and going. Shortly after I arrived, other foreign visitors came, were (very politely) told by the owner that only Japanese is spoken but that if they were okay with that they could choose where to sit, looked freaked out, then left. I humbly respect them for fighting English linguistic neoimperialism. Traveling used to be an exchange, so learn some words (the lunch set literally is steak lunch with a Japanese accent - you can do it) and pay this place a visit.

Anyway, Food was good, quick and reasonably priced in my opinion (Lunch set - garlic sauce steak with rice and draft beer, good portion for an adult...

I can see why this place has such high reviews. The restaurant is very spacious and the staff is very kind. The food comes out fast too. The food was very good. I think honestly it has to be my favorite thing I ate in Japan. The food was homey and flavorful. I bought the fried chicken, cheese hamburger steak and the fries. Hands down best fries in Japan. It was so crispy and light ~ There is no English menu but you can easily use google translate if needed and...
