First night ever in Japan. We had another place nearby saved on good maps, and we got there with no reservation and would Have had to wait quite some time. Got to Nishiki and lucked out that a couple Japanese diners there spoke enough English to tell us “cash only, go to 7-11 and come back. It’s worth it!”
We did just that and ten minutes later were the last Saturday night patrons to be seated at the bar. My gf and I each ordered an 11-piece omakazi with zero regrets. Chef threw in some bonus squid dishes with our beer and sake orders.
The other diners and the staff were incredibly kind and curious, and the food could not have been fresher or made with more love.
We fly out of Hakodate next weekend and might come back to...
Read moreMy husband and I were in the area after going to Mt Hakodate and wanted an authentic sushi dinner and it was definitely what we got! Restaurant was run by a nice elderly japanese couple. There was a set menu ("I only do japanese sushi!") where we received 9 different seafood nigiri from the sushi chef. It was so good! We also got a variety of seafood sushi (eg scampi, abalone, squid, fatty tuna, oyster, crab). Free green tea as well and refilled constantly by the chef's wife. For 2100 yen it was such a steal. And he also gave us a sweet treat at the end "a gift from me!" and asked us if we were full and if we wanted any more. Lovely experience and definitely will come back if we are ever back...

The sushi is served on the counter and eaten with your hands, not chopsticks. The fish were extremely fresh. Best of all, the lovely couple was so accommodating and fun to talk to. After this experience, I was unable to spoil this memory by eating sushi anywhere else for the rest of my...
