Soba noodle Tsukumo (Japanese yam) HAKONE — Restaurant in Hakone

FOREIGNERS BEWARE - tried to eat here as it was walking distance from our Hakone hotel and was recommended by the hotel. Saw a couple put their name down on the ticketing machine and it said that there were two parties ahead of us. Asked for an English menu and was told they do not have it AND they are reservation only.

Thought this was odd since we just watched a couple join the waiting list on the machine. Went back and tried to put our name down on the ticketing machine like the couple before us and were told to leave as it was reservation only. Seems like they do not want to serve foreigners as it was not busy and a couple just put their name down as we walked in at 2PM. Read another review with a similar experience so it seems they do this often.

If I could give zero stars, I would. This was an extremely disappointing experience. The host was unwelcoming and seemed unwilling to assist us, giving the impression that they don’t want to serve non-Japanese-speaking customers.

When we arrived at 2 PM, the restaurant was completely empty, yet we were told that reservations were required. There was a waitlist machine, which we started to use, but the host quickly came over and claimed it was “broken.” It felt like they were making excuses to turn us away.

If you don’t speak Japanese, I would recommend avoiding this place entirely. The lack of hospitality was shocking and...

We had our lunch here, while heading to Mt Fuji. It is a best place to stop over, located at Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, serving their sumptuous and authentic Soba noodles, served with a complimentary Wheat tea. Best to partner with Shrimp and FRESH vegetable Tempura, i think freshly harvested from their farm. What’s really great here which I will never forget during my Japan Tour 2022 is that the Squash Tempura taste like Sweet Potato, deliciously (heaven)! Oh my! I’ve never been tasted for my whole life ☺️👍 The staff here are also courteous and welcoming. I will definitely go back here with my friends from the Philippines...
