Our experience here (me and my wife) was nothing but pleasant due to the delicious food and catering staff attitude.
We stumbled upon it when trying to make ad-hoc plans for dinner after a long day that ended with the island's attractions. We were looking for a place to enjoy (ideally raw) oyster and/or sushi which they seemed to have, so we stopped by at 17:00 sharp (their opening hours).
They took us in (without prior reservation) and, guided by the nice waitress, we made our food choices. She also helped with the drink and I ended up somehow with the best sake I tried so far (and the fact that it is local brand and is not a common find in liquor stores makes it even more special:) ).
I won't post pictures of the food as many did already but i will just comment the taste: it was delicious and we enjoyed every little bite! Delivery (from one of the chefs) was also exactly how i like it: simple and pleasant to follow.
In summary: delicious food from very nice people in a cosy place that i would recommend anyone to try with an open heart.
Bonus: we also got a recommendation for a raw oyster place from the same nice waitress. That's more than we expected and even if we could not make it this time (due to travel schedule) it was another fine touch of a very good service and attitude. Thank you for that, Miss Kuwata! (Your recommendation is pinned for our next visit here:) ).
PS: i saw some not so well balanced reviews from people downgrading the taste of the dish while accompanying it with beer and I cannot help commenting on it. I may not be a sushi expert but I'm in beer:) and beer is a good companion for other dishes (meat based, snacks, etc) not for sushi. Don't need to trust me, trust beer advertising! (none promotes beer with/for sushi:) ). Long story short: bad sushi reviews from people that mix it with beer ... it just not...
Read moreWhat an experience!! I visited Sushi Tensen for lunch the other day with a couple of my friends. I made reservations ahead of time and requested to be seated at the counter. I highly recommend sitting at the counter! We chose the ¥6500 lunch (per person), which consisted of an appetizer, oyster soup, and 10 pieces of sushi. It was plenty for us and we were full afterwards. We basically had our own personal sushi chef and he made our sushi one piece at a time, explaining what each one was as he set it on our plates in front of us. Every piece of sushi was fresh and delicious! There was also some ginger on our plate. He recommended we eat a piece of ginger to cleanse our palate in between each piece of sushi. It was such a memorable experience that I want to go back! Our sushi chef spoke English pretty well and we really enjoyed watching him make the sushi. They do accept credit cards.
**Updating to say they’ve renovated and now all seats are counter seats. I went again with a different friend and she loved the experience...
Read moreWent here late at night with my brother and dad after exploring Miyajima all day on August 12, 2018. Probably the most memorable dining experience of my life.
This was easily the best sushi I've ever had, and even after living in Japan for two years no other nigiri came close. That's not to say I haven't had plenty of absolutely mind-blowing sushi, but going here made me understand what separates great sushi from masterful sushi.
While Miyajima itself is touristy (although that should not discourage you from visiting), in the closing hours of my visit we were alone with the owners of the shop and a few local regulars. I'll never forget the hilarious conversation I had with Mark while eating, and just how incredibly welcoming the chef made me feel. It was like sitting in on a family dinner, I will always cherish the memory I made here.
I sadly don't have any pictures or videos, it was the type of situation that called for living...
