A small, charming restaurant run by a lovely elderly couple — exactly the kind of home-style cooking promised on the sign. They were so sweet and funny, spoke a bit of English (and even some German!), and did their best to explain each dish.
The food was simple but incredibly tasty — probably perfected over decades. One of the best miso soups I’ve had in Japan, and the cabbage really stood out. The touch of chili and garlic was a refreshing surprise after two weeks in Japan, where that’s rather uncommon.
It doesn’t get more authentic than this. The place has cozy pub-like vibes, and you feel as if they’ve invited you into their living room. There’s only one set meal (¥980) that includes a generous variety of small dishes. Ours happened to be vegetarian, which was great after so much meat elsewhere.
They probably vary the menu by season — according to the sign, it can also include fish or meat. The only thing I missed was a drink option like tea; they only serve water, but that’s a small detail.
Would definitely come back whenever I’m...

They do speak a little English to carry a conversation. The food is a steal at 980 yen for a home cooked meal that is nothing like what you can find at a chain restaurant. It’s an array of seasonal veggies and a stuffed cabbage that is still the best I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is somewhat eclectic and retro and adds to the charm of the shop.
While the shop is small, the owners do the best they can to take covid precautions. There is a sink with soap to wash your hands as you enter. They do wear masks and ensure social distancing.
The experience there truly lives up to their advertisement for a home cooked meal. I will return again the next time I’m...
