Dear Dumbo Cafe,
thank you for being our shelter for so many days getting us through the heavy rain in Kanazawa.
We landed here on a Tuesday our first time, in search and need of a nice cafe close to our location to escape heavy rain. Little did we know we just stumbled in our little safe haven for the next couple of days.
At first it seems like one of those little stand in cafes that is focusing on take away until you see those step stairs leading you up to the first floor into a guestroom that will immediately beam your thoughts into other places and spheres.
Absolute outstanding is the quality of the baked goods which are all self-made. Presentation, amount, texture, level of sweetness which has that typical careful japanese dose of sugar.
So far we tried their cinnamon roll, brownie, glazed donut, basque and NY cheesecake, tiramisu as well as the apple pie (might be a daily special or so).
Hand dripped coffee, cinnamon late and the apple juice are not less fantastic. You not just taste but also see everything is made with 100% professional execution and love.
With the knowledge posts like this could overhype a place (like other cafes in Kanazawa) we still want to leave this feedback rather as a...
Read moreWe found Cafe Dumbo about 30 minutes before opening and decided to wait. By the time the doors opened a line had formed, but service was warm and efficient and we were seated quickly. The space is bright and cozy with comfortable chairs and shelves of books, a lovely spot to linger. The pastry cabinet is the star and it was genuinely hard to choose. We had a hot and an iced cinnamon maple latte, both balanced and not too sweet. We shared the apple pie, carrot cake, cinnamon roll, and Basque cheesecake, all generous slices with great texture and flavor, and the prices felt very fair for the size and quality. It feels family run in the best way, with friendly staff and thoughtful little touches. If you want first pick from the cabinet, arrive a little early because it gets...
Read moreThe pastries are incredible, but the ordering process is kind of a nightmare. If you are from out of town and want to try the goods here, I'd recommend coming RIGHT at opening or 10 minutes before and wait. They take each order one by one, you pick out what you want, pay, and head to a table. If you are behind a bigger group it can take awhile. Even if you want to-go you have to wait in a loooong line. I will say what we had was worth the wait, around 25 mins after opening. We had a cinnamon roll, cake, and two drinks. The cake was dense with a cream cheese and subtle beet icing and the roll was perrrrrfectly sweet with a crispy bottom. If they changed the ordering system this place would be a 10/10. Service was warm and...
