LEON — Restaurant in Kanazawa

When we first entered the place, we saw many details that made us think that it was an authentic place. The stone oven and various decorative products beautify the design of the restaurant. But unfortunately I cannot say the same for the restaurant's service. We ordered one pizza and one drink. He laughed at this order and asked us to order two drinks and we said okay and ordered it because we had to. With the drinks, we have received two small appetizers. The pizza and limoncello were delicious but the portions were so small. According to the prices on the menu, we should have paid 3,400 jpy, but we received 4,840 jpy. When we asked why this price difference was due, we received the answer that he added the 10 percent tax and the appetizers. We were definitely not informed of these hidden fees, and since the menu was entirely in Japanese, we could not see any warnings that's why we think it's not a tourist-friendly place.

I had to come and make a review after seeing all the post from ignorant tourists. As someone who speaks almost no Japanese, I know it is my responsibility to prepare when entering a new place. It is not hard to use Google translate, look up customs like otoshi, and most of all - to be humble!!

This place was the highlight of my trip to Japan in 2023. We came twice during our time in Kanazawa - for the food and for the excellent service. The owner was delightful and happy to make conversation (my husband was learning Japanese), and did his best to help include me. He made a great gin and soda for me, and we loved the pizza as a break from seafood. He even let us stay late after a lightning storm broke out and we had forgotten our umbrella! And he tolerated me taking pictures of his beautiful space.

I am now hoping we will even be allowed to come back during our trip this summer because this business has been attacked unfairly. If not, I will have to blame the foreigners who come in with ignorance and...

Got tired of eating seafood so wanted something a little different! Leon is a great spot, good pizza, a welcoming service and a good bang for your buck!
