We have been there twice. My Japanese wife and I had lived in France for 16 years and have eaten at most levels, 1 and 2 star Michelin and the local traditional French restaurants. The chef at Makihara worked in France and he learned well. His cooking is authentic and full of flavour. As for his wine list I doubt there is any restaurant in Kanazawa that has such a remarkable selection of great Burgundy wines; unfortunately it shows in the prices. The atmosphere can suffer for us because he works alone and is so busy that there is little chance for conversation with him. We have a 20th wedding anniversary coming in August and we have decided to go to Makihara in preference to all the other top French restaurants in Kanazawa because one, he offers a la carte and two, the dishes we are sure will equal even surpass theirs after seeing the selection of dishes posted on...
Read moreWhat a fantastic find in kanazawa, im half french from Montpellier and currently live in Los Angeles and sadly LA has very little when it comes to authentic french cooking. The chef here lived in france for 12 years and to my delight speaks perfect french (arguably better than mine!!!) food was incredibly delicate, extremely well crafted and incorporated french and japanese ingredients.
