eX cafe Gion Shinbashi — Restaurant in Kyoto

eX café is the best café I've been to in Japan ❤️

It's located right around the corner from beautiful Shirakawa-dori with a subtle little entrance from the street. Inside, there's a short hallway, before you get to the main room in the café, with chairs lined up in front of the café counter. Then there the innermost room, past the main one, where you take off your shoes and sit in an intimate square-shaped room with a view out to a small garden from one corner. This is where we sat during our visit. We had matcha tea, and some desserts which were absolutely amazing 😍 The staff were also really nice and welcoming.

One of my favourite experiences living in Kyoto- traditional, delicious, peaceful, fun (and also meditative!) First time I came here it was completely empty- I got to enjoy my delicious dango with the accompanying traditional Japanese music and sounds of a water stream. The Hoku hoku dango setto was so good I knew I had to come again! Definitely worth checking out- the gion location is small but cozy, and quiet at opening and lunchtime. The matcha here is also delicious, smooth and not bitter at all. It’s a super fun and memorable experience, you get to take your time roasting your dango and enjoy the music...

It was my last day in Kyoto and the second time I had visited the city.

And once again, I was leaving with the feeling that I had missed out on something.

Then I stumbled upon the eX cafe. It had a traditional atmosphere and style as well as a more traditional menu.

My matcha latte was brilliant.

And the feeling of missing out on something, was filled slightly by my visit to ex Cafe.

I would definitely recommend ex Cafe to anyone in Gion, Kyoto..... whether you want to eat, drink or are just looking for...
