Gohan-ya — Restaurant in Kyoto

⚠️⚠️You CANNOT walk in this restaurant if you don’t buy alcohol

When we walked in this restaurant during night, a waitress came to welcome and help us to take the shoes off, however, after a few seconds, a waiter came out then and told us we CANNOT have dinner here if we don’t drink alcohol. We have to wear on our shoes and go out then.😠The waiter even don’t feel sorry for what he was just saying. we don’t even know if he was just lying to let us OUT bc he was a non-native speaker discriminator

But it’s been shown as a RESTAURANT not a BAR on the map, right? Besides, you don’t have any sign out there to show us we MUST buy alcohol to dinning in.

Excellent authentic experience. This place makes you feel like this is where locals come to eat. There's no menu in English. However, the staff spoke pretty good English and with a little help from Google lens it's decipherable. Recommend just telling the waiter sort of what you're feeling like or just asking them for suggestions. Gohan-ya is a fantastic izakaya. The food was amazing and the staff were very kind, patient and friendly and it's very reasonably priced. It was so good, my friends and I ended up going three out of our five days in Kyoto.
