I highly recommend this place for lunch for anyone who comes to visit Kinkakuji. The soba here is quite unique with dried saba. The flavor is deep and enriching. The tendon is made to perfection, crispy by frying, and crispy by freshness of vegetables along with shrimp. The combo filled me completely yet even the last few bites are still impactful. This is another level from chain restaurants. Well, the food from chain restaurants in Japan is already decent, but this one you can taste the originality. Oh and please add a scoop of buckwheat ice cream (same grains for making soba) to your meal. The ice cream texture does not have to be smooth in order to be delicious and this shop puts it. There is some crunchy element from small specks of ice and toasted barley. Well this shop is popular and the price is moderate so be patient to get amazing food.

Walked in pretty much at exactly 11 30am when they first opened, already there was a table there. Ordered the signature Hanamaki soba and it was astonishing. Soba noodle was very chewy, and the flavour from the shoryu was just right. There were many toppings that included a prawn tempura, fried soft shell crab, a pickled plum, and others that until now I still don't know what they were. The toppings can get soggy from dipping in the shoryu for too long so eat it fast! A side note, I didn't order the eel but apparently eel is also their speciality. The atmosphere was great, staff were super nice and the table setting was well organised. The restaurant also includes a table section and a tatami section for the customers to choose from. I would consider it the best dinning option for lunch/dinner near the kinkaku temple area!

It is a little gem found during our last trip to Kyoto. My wife and I went to another one near to the main road and was felt in love with nishin soba about 10 years ago. So instead of going back to the same restaurant we decided to give this restaurant a try. It's really beyond our expectation. It is a superb place for lunch after visiting kinkakuji, it can be busy hence do expect some waiting time, it varies depending on the queue and no. of people waiting, or you can check the waiting list just outside the restaurant and you can write down your name and go for a short walk if you want.

You know the place is going to be good when there is a queue. This place has a sign-up sheet at the front for you to put your name down before waiting. Seating can be either at a chaired table or tatami seating. I had the herring soda set with tempura and my friend had the duck soba. We shared the duck starter. Food was amazing! Depending on what you get, the price could be ¥10,000-¥20,000 or ¥20,000-¥30,000. Totally worth that 45 minute wait. I definitely recommend and any soba choice will be the right one here.

A soba restaurant just a few minutes from the iconic Golden Pavilion in Kyoto offers an unforgettable culinary experience. Whether you visit the temple or not, the soba is simply exquisite. The tempura, with its incredible crispiness, takes the meal to a whole new level. It’s a combination of textures and flavors that can only be found in Japan, creating a truly unique memory for anyone lucky enough to try it. Definitely worth adding to your itinerary!

Hard to give three stars to this restaurant, as almost everything was excellent, but we just did not enjoy our food. Not any of us. It was beautifully presented - the vegetables in my dish were actually moving like something was alive in there but it was just an intentional effect caused by the magnificent design of the dish. I really wanted to enjoy the food, and I was very hungry, but it was just not to my taste; earthy and wet.
