Higashiyama Ogata — Restaurant in Kyoto

We made the reservation on Omakase and ordered the November menu for 36300 yen. We visited the restaurant tonight and were charged 44000 yen in the end without any explanation. We asked for the reason of the price difference and simply got the answer of "yes we raised the price."

We are familiar with fine Japanese restaurants and do understand the price may vary from time to time. But 7000 yen is not a little difference that can be raised without any explanation or notice.

The meal, to be honest, was neither worth the price nor the fame. I know this is not the original 緒方 that won the Michelin stars, but as a branch store, this is not even close to a Michelin standard.

This is my best kaiseki experience so far. The restaurant has a well crafted Japanese garden. From ambience, reception, chefs and sous-chefs, I’d give 5/5. Each course is a piece of art. The ingredients are refreshing, high-end and rare to be found elsewhere. The pace is relaxing and soothing. The cooking is delicate and kaizen. The food portion is quite satisfying. We started at 4:00 pm and ended at 6:00pm. It was such a zen moment seeing the garden going through the susnset while enjoying the food.

We had chosen a ¥40.000 pp dinner but the food quality did not reflect the price. Only given 1 clam dish ( hamaguri) and shirako (cod milt) with 2 slices of wagyu. My wile and I have eaten in many top restaurants in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto and I would say this is the poorest and worst meal we have experienced. Eventual cost ¥98,000.
