A charm: Awata Shrine's sword spear and large lantern
Awata Shrine is located at the eastern entrance to Kyoto (Awataguchi), and was a place of deep faith for travelers traveling along the Tokaido road, praying for a safe journey.
The Awata Festival in October is known for its sword spear and large lantern. On the night before Health and Sports Day, a night-time ritual is held with the sacred treasure, Akoda Hoko, at the center, and after the ceremony at the Uryu Stone in front of the Kuromon Gate of Chion-in Temple, a procession takes place through the parishioners' neighborhoods. During the procession, a large lantern called the Awata Large Lantern is paraded.
This is a 2008 restoration of the lantern float described in the diary of Yamashina Tokitsugu, a nobleman of the Warring States period, "Tokitsugu-kyo-ki," as "the elegance of Awataguchi... an unprecedented and astonishing thing," and in the temple poem of Shoren-in, "Kacho Yoryaku," as "there are various constructions... a truly magnificent sight."
The Kenboko, which leads the mikoshi (portable shrine) during the Shinko Festival on Health and Sports Day, is a long pole adorned with a brass sword tip and metal fittings of various designs, and is supported by a single person called a Hokosashi, who bends the tip and rings a bell as he parades. The number of these still in existence is greater in Kyoto, and like the Yamahoko in the Gion Festival, they are ritual implements that are protected by each town of...
