Isami Sushi — Restaurant in Kyoto

We tried many sushi places all over Japan, even in Kanazawa which had amazing fresh fish, but this place was THE BEST sushi and sashimi, truly a master's work.

You can order a la carte as well as course meals, which aren't too expensive. We ordered the most expensive course meal, which was about 6500 yen each if I remember correctly (possibly more), and all the courses were absolutely delicious. They put the exact amount of wasabi directly on the sushi, then you just dip it fish side in the soy sauce, and oof 😘🤌 perfection.

One of my favorite dishes ever is the egg pudding, every restaurant I tried made it differently and it was so fun tasting all the different varieties. The egg pudding here was made with seafood and was just 💦

Portions are smaller in Japan than in the United States, so each course was small, but believe me it was enough at the end of the course I was stuffed. My protein-devouring-gym-bro partner could've definitely had seconds, but hey, just enjoy the experience lol

They spoke some basic English, but I beg you please learn some Japanese 🙏 just the basics on how to order at least, as well as basic Japanese manners, let's not be accidentally rude and ignorant...

Bad reviews need to get their palettes checked. Some of the best nigiri me and my partner have ever had in our lives. Get the fatty tuna. You will not regret it. Extremely high quality fresh fish for a reasonable price.

For comparison, we are from an expensive city so what was inexpensive to us, could be a lot for others.

It sat in the bowl as I finished my beer, taking my time to enjoy and it barely melted. Texture was perfect. Will dream about this place when we go home. We went twice because it was THAT good.

The service was good and sushi was OK but not great. Rice was overcooked and some of the fish cuts were not great. Also the atmosphere arguably can be improved. I understand that it is a small place which strive for authenticity but at least in the back of the restaurant where we sat it felt like being in a garage.
