Hidden in the soft quiet of Kyoto’s backstreets, Ramen Monsen welcomed me like a warm blanket on a winter evening. I ordered the sake lees ramen — a bowl that tasted like stories passed down through generations.
The broth, gently infused with local sake kasu, was creamy, rich, and soothing — like the kind of warmth that doesn’t just fill your stomach, but settles deep in your soul. Every spoonful brought a subtle sweetness, the depth of fermented rice, and a lingering nostalgia I couldn’t quite place.

Read moreWe already came to this place almost 3 years ago after our visit of Fushimi district as the serve sake lees ramen. The 2nd time confirmed that this place is not to be missed ! (After dozens of other ramens in Japan and overseas.) The chicken broth is a nice difference compared to other places and it is so creamy ! The sake lees pairs perfectly and all the aroma is developed step by step. There are some veggies and charsiu with it.
This time we also added karaage and gyoza and both were great (the karaage is thick !)
