One of the highlights of our Kyoto trip—the Bune Boat Ride in Fushimi felt like stepping straight into a historical drama scene. With the gentle canal, rows of willow trees, and the soothing rhythm of the water, it was the perfect escape from the city bustle.
This was taken during golden week and here are some helpful tips for fellow explorers:
Book Online in Advance Spots can fill up quickly, especially during weekends or holiday seasons. Booking online is a must if you want to secure your preferred time slot.
Arriving by Car? Park your rental car for free outside the nearby Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum (which is worth a visit on its own). You can leave your car there, hop on the boat, and return after your cruise. Super convenient!
The Boat Ride Though it has that charming, vintage look, the boat is automated—quiet, smooth, and modern underneath it all. The ride includes a short stop for about 15 minutes, giving you time to stretch your legs and take in more of the scenery before continuing the loop back.
Not Taking the Boat? No worries—the surrounding canal area is serene and scenic, especially during late spring. It honestly felt like walking through a period film set. I imagine it’d be even more breathtaking in autumn with the foliage...
Read moreVisited in early December, and we were unable to book online but we got tickets at the booth and boarded the boat basically straight away.
The advertising isn’t exactly clear. In reality, it is a 15 minute boat ride down a canal, you stop at the museum of Fushimi (NOT the sake museum) for approx 30 mins, and then you go back down the same route to return to the boarding ‘dock’.
It’s nice, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to ride it - unless it’s in cherry blossom season. I can only imagine how magnificent they would be, they are along the whole canal but obviously weren’t in season when we visited.
When we arrived we were given a number which determined the order in which we boarded and therefore sat. I don’t know how you can get seat 1-3, but they are in the prime position facing the front of the boat on both the way there and back. There is still a pleasant view from the centre/sides of the boat, but the views from the front of the boat are MAGNIFICENT. Really wish we could have sat there, it would have made a...
Read moreNot really worth the money we paid for. We arrived after Sakura bloom, so everything is green, that's one factor. The ride itself we were told that it's a 40 mins boat ride, in reality it's a very, very short ride to Fushimi Minato Bridge, then we get off, wait for nearly half an hour in a park where there's nothing to do and not even a photogenic place (I'm sure it can be beautiful when Sakura is in its peak bloom) then we get back on the same route.
I'd give 2 star if I could but the queue wasn't very long (only 6 people including us on our boat) I asked a staff if there's any place we could leave our big backpack and souvenirs since it's very heavy, they did help looking after those items even if it's not their job, nothing was touched. We're very very pleased.
If you want to go I'd recommend the full bloom period, and WITH ADVANCE...
