My experience at Tel Aviv restaurant was unfortunately less than satisfactory. Upon arrival, the ambiance seemed cozy and inviting, and we were warmly greeted at the bar. However, seating upstairs was limited, resulting in a cramped wait. The gin and tonics we ordered were decent, yet the gin was barely noticeable; a dash of lemonade or lime would have been a welcome addition. When it came to ordering our meal, many items we were interested in were either sold out or the owner was unsure if they could be prepared. This caused particular uncertainty for my vegetarian wife, who felt uncomfortable with initial remarks from the chef.Although the dishes I selected were okay, they did not live up to my expectations. The hummus and falafels my wife ordered were not fresh and seemed hastily prepared with oil, leading to her feeling significantly unwell.Adding to our frustration, the owner spent a considerable amount of time upstairs chatting with friends, neglecting his customers downstairs who had questions and faced several issues.I believe Tel Aviv has the potential to be an exceptional restaurant, but this requires more focus on food quality and customer service. As it stands, I cannot recommend visiting...
Read moreTel Aviv was one of our highlights from our two week trip to Japan. Both the food and atmosphere were phenomenal. The space is small, which provides a close/communal feeling with both the owner and other patrons. While traditional Japanese foods are great, by time we got to week two of our trip we were really craving fresh vegetables and other favored flavors. We're from NYC, and Israeli food is one of our faves. Tel Aviv delivered splendid flavor and freshness and was honestly some of the best Israeli restaurants I've eaten at. The Tel Aviv salad was incredible and had a unique spin, containing "surprises" as one other guest shared with us. There was mint and cranberry, which added something really unique. I'll definitely try to recreate that at home! The baba ganoush and falafel were our other two highlights. I feel I must have had 100 different falafels in my lifetime, but this had to be one of my favorites with perfect spice, herbs and texture. The owner has a great story, and has created something really unique and special in Kyoto. The memories of flavor and friendliness will stay with us for...
Read moreMy husband and I had the absolute pleasure of dining at Tel Aviv in Kyoto, and it quickly became a highlight of our trip. From the moment we stepped inside, we were wrapped in the warmth and generosity that defines true hospitality — all thanks to Moshe, the incredible owner and heart behind the restaurant.
The food? Beyond stellar. Every dish was a love letter to authentic Israeli cuisine — vibrant, soulful, and deeply comforting. Moshe imports ingredients directly from Israel, and you can taste the difference in every bite. It wasn’t just a meal; it was a deeply nostalgic experience that brought us right back home in the most beautiful way.
The pita? Absolutely unforgettable. Soft, warm, and perfect. I honestly don’t know how I’ll go too long without it — chef’s kiss.
We are so grateful for our time at Tel Aviv and for the care and heart Moshe puts into every detail. We will absolutely be back. If you’re anywhere near Kyoto — or even if you’re not — this place is...
