Everyone knows chawanmushi is a Japanese side dish that comes usually with a set meal, but do you know chawanmushi has it's roots from mainland China and actually can be a main dish? Here in Yussou is known to be the origin of chawanmushi in Japan, and the story goes by the owner tried the custard steam egg in China and brought the recipe back to Japan because he liked it so much. The chawanmishi here is served in a bit bowl instead of the usual cup size and the texture is so fluffy and flavorful than the usual ones we had else where. The popular set meal comes with a bowl of rice topped with colorful shredded egg, minced meat and probably dried shrimp meat colored in pink I think. It also comes with a braised pork with is also a well known Chinese dish here in Nagasaki. The restaurant is big with a traditional setup and well organized to handle the crowd with numbering queue system. The main highlight is of course the chawanmushi, while the other food were okay. Good to experience for its history value as well.

The Mog Champ sends his regards. If you're in Nagasaki for only a limited time and you're after their specialties, you won't need to look much further because Yossou is a restaurant that has the best chawanmushi or in other words steamed egg. The building itself is quite old due to its history but it's been extremely well-maintained and clean, I went upstairs after they collected my shoes and gave me a wooden token so they know where my shoes are placed and sat in a traditional tatami-mat room and ordered through a tablet (how modern!) I ordered their special signature chawanmushi set and I definitely recommend it if this will be your first time coming here, it was worth it and delicious and if I'm ever back in Nagasaki, I would love to come back here again. Thank you for the food Yossou, it was delicious! Mogliest Regards, Your Mog Champ

When you find a restaurant brimming with locals, it's a clear indicator that you've chosen the right place! As you step into the establishment, you'll be required to exchange your shoes for their provided footwear before being guided to your seat by the welcoming staff. The size of the Chawanmushi they serve is truly unparalleled, presented in an exceptionally large bowl. Likewise, the tempura set stands out with its abundance of prawn tempura outnumbering the vegetable tempura – a remarkable ratio of 5 prawn tempura to 3 vegetable tempura. This not only offers great value for your money but also delights your taste buds. The overall dining experience here is commendable, making it a must-visit dining spot if you happen to be in the area!

I am not from Japan but I grew up eating Chawanmushi. Sometimes it’s too watery, sometimes it’s too dry and doughy sometimes it can be too fishy or eggy. But I never had such a silky, balanced, and rich chawanmushi ever. The tenshoku was served with sakura mochi that was wrapped in seasoned sakura leaf, the dessert youkan (red bean paste) had a hint of citrus. It was the best meal during my 3 day Nagasaki trip. Coming back for sure either tomorrow (before taking a train back home) or next year.

I have been this place along with Nagasaki born person and as recommended by her, we had Mushizushi and Chawanmushi. When you enter the place you feel like you went back in time , a traditional Japanese style shop with Japanese traditional vibe, and if you are a local enthusiast, this is the must visit place to try local cuisine. I loved the chawanmushi, and it’s was quite large portion as compared to other parts of Japan. But overall a nice experience with good treat.

This a must go restaurant in Nagasaki. This well known restaurant sells a very distinctive Nagasaki cuisine, the Chawanmushi. This is actually steamed egg that contains a mix of seafood. They had perfected this signature dish by making it for the past 150 years. We ordered 3 sets of the dish. Their steamed egg was served hot in a cup and indeed tasted very smooth, silky, refined with a delicate yet complex flavour.
