It was clear from the moment we walked in the door that foreigners are not welcome here. We were greeted by the owner with "Do you speak Japanese?" and when we replied by saying "A little," he begrudgingly ushered us in. When I clearly asked in Japanese what the fish of the day was or what type of sake he recommended, he acted as if he couldn't understand. Since there was no English and a lot of kanji on the menu, we used our phones to translate the items and order. He then proceeded to make fun of us "gaijin" in Japanese to his wait staff in front of us, openly laughing, assuming we couldn't understand.
The wait staff was genuinely warm and personable, but the chef/owner was rude from beginning to end and made us feel not only unwelcome but also like an imposition, despite our best efforts to be polite and kind.
While the food was tasty, I would discourage other foreigners from visiting here, even if you speak Japanese fluently. It's clear that the owner isn't happy for the patronage from people outside of Japan, as evidenced by his mockery of us "gaijin." Thankfully this is the first negative restaurant experience I've ever had in Japan, and this is my third trip to this...
