I've spent more than a year in Japan and I also wrote a 3400 word introduction to vegan Japanese food, so I'm well-versed on this cuisine. The two meals I ate here were the most delicious Japanese food I've ever eaten. Every dish, from the miso soup to the dessert, was incredibly tasty. And as you can see from the photos, the presentation was likewise spectacular. These meals were the fixed lunch, that costs ¥1980, but you can order a respectable meal here for half that. Whether or not you've vegan or have a special liking for Japanese food, Grains is a place you must try when visiting Nagoya. If that's not enough, the dining area is beautiful and the staff is super friendly. From what I've just written, I probably don't need to tell you that this is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. If I ever return to Nagoya it will probably be for the sake of trying Grains'...

A few days ago I was looking for a vegan restaurant for dinner within walking distance of my airbnb and this lovely place popped up on my suggestions. When I arrived there (late at night) I didn’t know at the time but you needed a reservation. However, the lovely waitress let me in regardless (thank you so much to her as there were no other vegan food places for me). I enjoyed my first traditional Japanese meal sitting on tatami mats. I also had my first vegan Kabayaki which was absolutely delicious! It was so good that I ordered take out for the next day. My one regret is that I wish I had the chance to visit again but I couldn’t as I was leaving very soon for another. I hope to visit this restaurant again.

I had dinner at Grains and ordered the full course, which included three main dishes. The meal began with an appetizer of grilled vegetable soy slices — incredibly juicy and packed with flavor, a delightful surprise for my palate. Next came the salad, featuring a mix of pickled and shredded cabbage, crispy fried mushrooms, and other fresh ingredients — refreshing and well-balanced. For the main course, I enjoyed miso soy slices, a plant-based burger, and a vege gyudon. Each dish was delicious, but I was especially impressed by the texture and depth of flavor in the miso soy slices and vege gyudon. I’ll definitely return to Grains the next time...

Highly recommend this place to all vegetarians and vegans. It's tucked away in a quiet neighborhood near the Nagoya train station (10-15 minute walk). Reservations are recommended but we showed up without one and were welcomed in because it wasn't busy. The food is very good especially the vegan teppanyaki style beef appetizer - it has a nice charred crispy outer texture and the inner texture is soft and melts in your mouth. The atmosphere is very quaint and traditional (sit on the tatami floor) but has a comfortable homely atmosphere.
