Cute ramen shop that offers a twist on ramen and some rice options. All ramen options are mapo-tofu-based, but you can choose yours with or without cheese. For the regular menu, there are three types of ramen - (1) mapo tofu (dry), (2) mapo tofu soup (you can include cheese if you want), and (3) grilled cheese and mapo tofu (dry). They also have rice bowls and side dishes such as gyoza. This restaurant also has a halal menu which offers two types of ramen - options 1 and 3 - as well as some rice options. We ordered the regular mapo tofu ramen soup with cheese, halal mapo tofu ramen, halal teriyaki chicken rice bowl, and a gyoza. The ramen soup was super flavourful, and the cheese was definitely a good addition. The dry mapo tofu ramen was good too. It tasted more spicy than the soup one. My hubby loved the teriyaki chicken rice bowl. The gyoza was delicious with thin dumpling skin. This is a very popular restaurant despite being away from the touristy sites. There was a line outside the restaurant when we came and a line when we left. Tucked behind a dessert shop, the restaurant is small, but the wait wasn't too long. Service was excellent. Great restaurant to try when in Nara.

One of the handful of halal-friendly options available at Nara, this place was literally a hidden gem within a quiet residential neighbourhood, and tucked behind a dessert shop (see the photos to see the alley to enter, the restaurant is on the right!) After walking around Nara Park, we took a direct public bus to the neighbourhood, and arrived around an hour before closing time, and thankfully it wasn't too crowded! Their halal menu (see photos) is pretty substantial, went with the cheese mapo tofu ramen + grilled chicken rice bowl add cheese (cos you can never get enough cheese 😋) and it was super goood - both dishes were packed with flavours, and the open concept kitchen meant we could watch the chefs prepare the food (although it also meant it can get kinda hot, especially if you're at the counter seats) For Muslims, do note that the prayer space beside the restaurant is no longer available - thankfully prayer options are available at other locations in Nara, such as the tourist information centre :)

Ooh! What a great little gem. One of the few places in Nara offering halal menu. If you’re stuck choosing what to eat, ORDER THE CHEESE MAPO TOFU RAMEN. It was packed full of flavour, very mildly spicy, and made a non tofu lover like me finish my bowl. I also got a small Teriyaki Chicken on the side which also tasted good! For those who have tasted “Mee Mamak” before - this kind of taste somewhat similar, and very much suits my asian tastebuds. The place is tiny so you do have to wait outside whilst people finish their meal, but we arrived towards closing time so we could take our sweet time! Contrary to what I’ve read on reviews that we need reservations, we came without one and was happily accepted. Perhaps because it wasn’t too full, not sure. The place is sort of tucked behind a narrow alleyway, but just use Google Maps with the live view on and you’ll be sweet. Happy customer! 🥰🥰🥰

I tried Mapo tofu ramen in Nara, which is quite a unique concept—Japanese ramen paired with Mapo tofu, available with or without soup. You can customize the spiciness level for both red chili and green pepper, and there are extra options like egg, garlic, cheese, and more. I ordered the ramen without soup, with extra chili, green pepper, and garlic. Personally, I find Mapo tofu tastier when eaten with white rice rather than with ramen. I didn’t enjoy the added garlic, as it was freshly crushed and mixed into the noodles. I would have preferred the garlic to be served separately so I could control the amount. The location is quite inconvenient and hard to find, but their customer service was excellent. The staff were very polite and friendly. While it was an interesting experience, I probably wouldn’t return.

Great place to eat out. I got a simple mopu tofu set with rice and no broth. The spice level was perfect for me. A good amount of spice but not too much. The tofu was cooked well and didn’t fall apart. They have both halal and vegetarian options (indicated by “/ve”). They take credit cards and cash and they have a restroom next door. They do not have a parking lot though. The restaurant is a bit hard to find, so I wanted to add pictures to help. You’ll want to turn down the alley by the red and white striped vending machine in the first picture and then turn left before the shaved ice store with the green sign in the second picture. From there you’ll turn right and enter through the door at the end on your left.

enter the alleyway (dont be scared !) look for a shaved ice cafe and go behind it, theres a path. visit was on a saturday, 20apr, reached at 11:50am with a minor queue where the server gave us the halal menu (attached as of apr'24) and also made our order prior to entering. we (7 people) entered the restaurant at 12:10pm, the atmosphere was intimate and authentically japanese. food was served at 12:20pm - 10/10, had the halal ma-po-tofu ramen set with the teriyaki chicken rice bowl, very unique dish compared to your typical ramen and was amazing. i would gatekeep this place but it's too good to not leave a review, would definitely give another visit if i were to come to Nara again :)
