Dining at The Lakehouse by The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko was another unforgettable highlight of my stay. Unlike the Japanese restaurant, which leans fully into tradition, The Lakehouse offers a refined and sophisticated take on contemporary dining where East meets West.
The experience is elevated yet approachable, with a strong sense of place, every dish draws inspiration from the natural beauty of Oku-Nikko and the bounty of its seasons.
The elegant interiors, paired with views of Lake Chuzenji and the surrounding greenery, create a serene yet cosmopolitan atmosphere that sets the stage for an extraordinary evening.
I opted for the seasonal tasting menu with wine pairing, which was truly the perfect choice. Each course was a thoughtful blend of local ingredients, modern technique, and artistic presentation.
Highlights included the sweetness of corn balanced with chickpeas and yogurt, the freshness of Itadaki trout served alongside vibrant vegetables, and the delicately cooked prawn with zucchini. The penne with salted lemon and basil brought a touch of light Italian influence while staying true to the menu’s harmony. The sustainable fish with saltwort and couscous was another standout clean, balanced, and deeply satisfying.
The star of the evening, however, was the Tochigi Kirifuri Kogen beef. Perfectly grilled, tender, and full of depth, it was paired beautifully with green pepper and eggplant, a dish that celebrated both the quality of the meat and the seasonality of the vegetables.
To close, the Marufuku tomato with Nyoho strawberry and fromage blanc was not just a dessert but an ode to the region refreshing, colorful, and beautifully composed.
The wine pairing elevated the journey even further, with selections that complemented each dish without overwhelming it. Service was impeccable attentive yet never intrusive and the pacing of the courses allowed each moment to feel relaxed and memorable.
What makes The Lakehouse truly special is the way it connects fine dining to the land and season around it. The menu doesn’t just showcase ingredients; it tells a story of Nikko in summer, from its vibrant produce to the cooling breezes off the lake.
Combined with the flawless service and breathtaking setting, it’s an experience that lingers long after the last glass of wine. A must-visit for anyone staying at The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko, and one of the finest expressions of contemporary dining I’ve experienced in Japan....

Read moreOh the wonderful rewards of a delicious lunch served by the nicest, sincere team along Lake Chuzenji at the Ritz Carlton! We did a 4 hour hike - 1200 feet straight up the mountain on the Chanokidaira trail (taking off right next to the Ritz Carlton) in the snow and then instead of a loop we came right down with clouds setting in. Our reward for no injuries, still laughing and feeling exceptionally fit - lunch at the Ritz. It was delicious - the quality, the selection, the presentation, the service, and the location - exceptional view of the lake. We had such a great time, we had a second glass of red wine. While it was not the least expensive lunch on our month long trip to Japan, it was definitely among the best. Our main waiter was Daria - he was from Italy - and he suggested renting bikes and cycling the cedar lined lane - in the Guinness world record book - (10 km) on the other side of Nikko - so we did and had another great adventure. We loved everything about our wonderful lunch experience at the Lakehouse Restaurant at the Ritz Carlton on Lake Chuzenji....
