Bashoudo — Restaurant in Osaka

(Trip was made back then on 12 Dec 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit)

Established in 1868, Bashodo has been in operation for 151 years and is probably most popular for their warabimochi.

We visited the store in Umeda and got a chance to experience a traditional stone milling process, where we could grind roasted black beans into kinako, which will be sprinkled on our warabimochi, using a stone grinder.

Unlike a traditional mochi which is made from glutinous rice, warabimochi is made from the bracken starch. It’s texture is more jelly-like and though it’s chewy, it dissolves quickly.

Lovely warabimochi- soft, squishy and sweet. I ordered the zenzai (red bean soup) which was great but a bit sweet for my tastebuds. The sencha was perfect. They ran out of 3 color dango 🍡 but the other dango was good too - very fresh!! 😃

The decor is nice and it was peaceful / not crowded when I visited at 6pm on a Friday. I got a sample at the door too 😊

The minus one star is for an annoying warabi mochi advertisement of 30 seconds (in a high pitched voice at the door) on repeat over and over and over again…it is louder than the music and I probably heard...

I have been to this restaurant several times and I really liked it. Enjoy authentic Japanese music and sweets. The staff is friendly, despite the fact that I am a foreigner. And if you have never tasted Japanese sweets and want to do it, you should definitely come here. This place is not hard to find, and there are many other traditional Japanese restaurants nearby. Therefore, I recommend visiting this restaurant...
