Yakitori Sumigg’s “Sumiyaki & Dashimaki” feels like a cozy family-run spot in Osaka, serving authentic homely Japanese food. Known for its specialties – sumiyaki (charcoal-grilled dishes) and dashimaki tamago (Japanese rolled omelette) – this restaurant is ideal for those seeking a genuine Japanese taste experience. However, it may not be the best choice for vegetarians due to limited options.
We tried their signature dishes: the charcoal-grilled chicken, which was smoky, tender, and flavorful, and the dashimaki tamago, a perfectly fluffy and savory omelette. For a vegetarian option, we had the Garlic Udon noodles, which offered a simple, homely taste, but the menu leans heavily towards non-vegetarian dishes.
Run by two kind ladies, the restaurant exudes a welcoming vibe. While language might be a slight barrier, the English menus make it tourist-friendly. For food enthusiasts looking to enjoy authentic and comforting Japanese cuisine, this is...
Read moreThe restaurant is very small. It has a small table outside the door and a little bar inside the table. Each can hold a small group of people (2-4 pp). The owners are very polite. They have an English menu for non-Japanese visitors, but the prices on the English menu seem to be 200-300 yen higher than the Japanese menu (I am not sure though). They also do not serve free water, so you have to buy bottle water for 200 yen each. The dishes taste good but it does not contain much material inside (e.g. 3-4 small pieces of curry chicken for 1100 yen). I guess there is nothing wrong with it, consider that it is close to a major tourist attraction. However, I feel that the overall rating of 4.8 is overrated, and I have definitely had better dishes/environment in other shops with similar prices.
EDIT: Thanks for the owner's response. This clarifies my question regarding the price difference. I would suggest clarify this in the English menu for...

The charcoal grilled chicken looks unassuming but it was absolutely delicious and nicely smoked. Highly recommend the garlic chewy variant.
We loved the food so much we had to get some to go. We got another large serving of chicken and a plain dashimaki tamago (the portion was huge!) and they also did not disappoint. We would totally come back next time we visit Osaka.
Also, the place is tiny— only seating space for maybe around 4-6 people but oh boy don’t let that deter you. Get their stuff to go, you won’t regret it.
The ladies running the shop were really friendly— we had a lovely time there. They also have English menus, just ask.

We visited again a year later and got the dashimaki tamago with umeboshi, garlic chewy chicken, oyakodon, and yakisoba....
