Cafe Gakenoue — Restaurant in Sapporo

Cozy, quiet and very relaxing coffee shop in Jozankei. They have good coffee, tasty cakes and other desserts.

Saw this coffee shop on the map. Its 10 or so minutes walk from central Jozenkei and I heard from one of the coffee shop owners in the area that they were quite good. Sign is clearly shown outside and there are a couple of parking slots outside.

You have to go through a couple of doors to get in and go up a flight of stairs before you reach the main cafe. The first thing you notice when you reach the floor are the wide windows and the gorgeous view outside. There are a number of tables to choose from and all of them has a clear view if the outside. The second thing that you notice is the pottery display. They use really good earthenware table pieces for serving the coffee and desserts. As you relax, you then notice the old wood fired heater in the middle of the space and as you settle down, the tasteful choice is music helps you feel even more at home.

I got the impression that the main focus of the cafe was the desserts, but they had a decent coffee option available as well.

Visited here during December. It's a small mom & pa cafe with a pleasant view, right at the edge of Jozankei.

December seems to be a slow season, but that's perfect for me as I basically had the whole place to myself.

Some people.cant stand cold treats during the freezing winter, but personally, winter is the best time to fully indulge the cold. Their zenzai set is pretty nice if you're looking for a more traditional treat, but their pumpkin cheesecake is also quite nice.

I can't say that the dessert here was a must-visit in Jozankei, but the view and the respite from a chilly day made it a worthwhile...

When I entered the cafe, there was full of customers. Ok, I can wait. But there were no waiter directed me to wait or queue, and nobody entertained me while waiting. Later, nobody ushered me to the seat. Quite disappointing service. The waiters and management wasted and ruined that pretty cafe. I didn’t have mood to taste the cake and coffee.
