Before I visited Sapporo, I looked for crab restaurants that accept a single diner (as I was travelling solo). This one came up as one of them. I booked a table for myself over the phone on the day I arrived in Sapporo and managed to get one at 5 PM (called around 3 PM) as this was the only available time slot (they told me over the phone). I took a short metro ride from the central Sapporo to Susukino, and it was only a few minutes walk away from the nearest exit (footpath was frozen over and made the walk a bit more difficult). When I got to the restaurant, I noticed that my name was on the welcome board at the entrance (thought it was a nice touch). I entered the restaurant and told the reception my name and that I booked for a table. I was shown to a small private tatami mats covered room with shoji doors for myself (there were regular tables with plenty of seats; don't know why I was told there weren't other seats available for that night). I ordered the drinks first (oolong tea and Chitosetsuru sake) while deciding on what to eat... And ended up getting the "Hyosetsu Three Great Crabs Course". It says it's for minimum two people on the menu but you can order it solo; you need to buy the whole kegani (horsehair crab) for yourself, which costs some extra money (obviously) but as I intended to splash a bit and pig out, I was okay with that. The food did not disappoint; it was great, and it was very filling. I didn't have to wait long for the food to come out either; always a plus when you are starving. Crab shells were cut in a subtle way for easy meat removal. The timing of the waitress bringing the new dish and taking away empty ones was spot on. I was very satisfied. As the title says, it was not cheap, but I think it was very well justified. I am hoping to...
Read moreI read a lot of promising reviews before making a booking via google and was very impressed with the service and food. Hyousetsu is located in Susukino where most of the nice restaurants are. When you first arrive at the main entry downstairs you will notice a reservation list for all the booking a for the night. You take the lift upstairs to the reception table, confirm your name and they take you to a different level for your own private room and server. It was a huge room just for two people but made us feel very comfortable and best thing of all is the sunken seat so no need to sit directly on the floor. Our private server was awesome he could speak enough English to get us through the night, but he was very good at explaining each dish and how to eat it. For the food there’s plenty on the menu, from a la carte, set course and shabu shabu. We went for set course, it’s very expensive but it’s very good and you won’t be disappointed. Note: some course require minimum 2 orders, where it doesn’t state you can order one and share which is what we did along with one king crab rice on the side (without the rice we were full already). The course we chose was about ¥7000 yen that included 2 types of crab king and snow served in 9 ways kind of like kaiseki or degustation. Each dish served came out beautifully presented one at a time. There is no time limit and you can stay as long as the restaurant is still opened. To get through this course took about 2 hours while eating and sipping on sake. For dinner of 2 people with course menu + sides + drinks, you are looking at approximately ¥7000 -¥15000. It’s expensive, but for the quality and freshness of the crab 🦀...
Read moreWe heard all about crabs in Hokkaido and decided to try this highly rated crab specialty restaurant on our last night here in Sapporo. The restaurant will have your name as on reservation printed n posted in front of the restaurant...like you were invited to a very serious talk. Make sure your reservation name is fancy enough for the board. The food was good. However, I strongly recommended ordering the hairy crab as it's the only live crab for the meal. The snow crab and king crab are previously frozen, I believed. It lost most of the bouciness after being defrost. But the hairy crab was delicious, sweet, and super juicy. Service is very attentive. You will be allocated to one service staff, and she/he will be checking on you every now and then, turning on your stove and replacing your plates. So all you need to do it peel your crab n eat it. It costs about 30000yen for two person, we ordered the three crabs meal where you can try all three kinda crabs ( Snow crab, King crab and steamed live hairy crab), you will need to order this meal for at least two person as they will steam the whole live crab and each of you get halve of it. They even bought out the crab for us to see? before steaming it. Personally, that was kinda cruel, but I guess it's to show you how fresh your food is. Lastly, we ended the meal with a refreshing yuzu sorbet. It was a great ending! The citrusy yuzu freshen up your...
