Everything I ate in Hokkaido Japan day seven 🇯🇵 Sapporo is super snowy - so even more reason to do a food tour around town! Breakfast: I went for a browse around Nijo Fish Market then to 玉翠園 tea shop for a green tea tasting. This is a family business over three generations and the elderly owner was kind enough to offer a free tea tasting and lesson on the best way to prepare green tea! I walked away with a LOT of matcha and a ceramic teapot - as well as his homemade matcha soft serve along with Hokkaido soft serve. It had a red bean filling too! Delish. Snack: - Negitorodon and kaisen-don with 10 different types of seafood from Shihachi inside COMICHI. Look at my pinned reel for my details! Lunch: Chicken thigh soup curry from Soup Curry Garaku. I get the hype! The customisation, the heat levels, the light soupy consistency! Separate reel coming. Dinner: - A random izakaya to hide from the snow storm. The first one I ducked into based on the vibes inside - over google reviews. The food was ok. I wouldn’t go back but had an extensive menu including kushikatsu, tempura, sushi, udon and okonomiyaki. Final snack: - 🍓 season in Japan and these cost a pretty penny. Good thing they’re one of the best I’ve had. These are from Saga - candy like sweetness, bright and the paler colour is from less exposure to the sun. Rare to find and worth it. We stumbled across this place on accident without realizing how popular it is. We liked it so much that we went back again the next day. When you arrive you have to go downstairs to get a ticket to get in line. The physical line means nothing. It’s just people waiting for their number to be called. Skip past all of them and just go straight down to the ticket machine. Then expect to wait at least an hour or more depending on the day and time. We waited about an hour on Thursday night at 7:45pm. We got there at 11:15am Friday (15 min before opening) and there were already 40 groups ahead of us. We ended up waiting about 1.5 hours. You don’t have to wait at the store though. Get your ticket and go do something else. Go hang out at a coffee shop or something. You have enough time. We got the chicken curry and both pork curries. The chicken was better in my opinion. The pork belly was tough and overcooked but the chicken was super tender. The soup is absolutely perfect. So much flavor, so much spice, fresh herbs, amazing vegetables. They oven roast the broccoli and top the soup with it so that the broccoli is crispy. The rice is seasoned as well. So much care and attention to detail. Food is exceptional. Price is very reasonable. Chicken curry is ¥1100. Amazing. Would come back again and again

Although we visited Sapporo in early December, there was a mini blizzard going on so it was freezing. We thought having some Hokkaido Soup Curry would be just the thing to warm us up and chase away the cold. Located just a couple of blocks south of Odori Park, our taxi was able to locate the restaurant quickly. The queue looked impressively long when we got there, going up the stairs from the basement location of the restaurant all the way to the entrance of the building at street level. However, as the restaurant was quite spacious, we actually didn’t wait too long to get a table for our family of four. Upon entering the actual restaurant doors, the amazing smell of curry will hit you and stir the appetite. Customers can choose from a variety of curry soups, extra ingredients and side dishes and drinks, but my family decided on the three tops picks: Sukiyaki Soup Curry, Chicken Soup Curry and Pork Soup Curry. We also varied the spice level of each with mild, regular and hot, and rounded off everything with buttered rice. Simply said, the meal was unforgettable! Price-wise, the budget for a meal costs about 1,300-2,000¥ per person depending on whether you also order drinks. In all, if hearty soup is your thing, Garaku should be a must-visit when in Sapporo.

Soup Curry GARAKU is a well-known restaurant in Hokkaido that specializes in soup curry. We visited on a weekday at lunchtime, but the queue was quite long. To reach the restaurant entrance, you need to descend a flight of stairs where there's a ticket dispenser. Just half an hour after the restaurant opened, there were already over a hundred people ahead of us in the queue. We took a stroll outside and waited until it was almost our turn before entering. It's worth noting that many celebrities dine at this restaurant, and you can see through the transparent glass at the entrance how the soup curry is prepared. Personally, I found their curry to have a stronger flavor. Even if you choose the mild level of spiciness, it still has a notable kick. The mushrooms and broccoli in the soup curry are delicious, and I would recommend adding them as extra toppings. The chicken leg soup curry is their signature dish, so if you only visit once, it's a good choice. Regarding the rice portion, you can choose from small, medium, or large sizes. Overall, this soup curry didn't impress me as much as I expected. It could be because I prefer the thick and flavorful Japanese-style curry that coats the rice, whereas the soup curry here felt a bit spicy.

This place is easy to find but hard to get in..reason being YOU HAVE TO QUEUE DAMN LONG to get in!!! Just when u thought u've reached the shop entrance there's another flight of stairs where there r people Q'ing so don't get ur hopes up too early. There are people Q'ing even before the shop opens so the hype is there. But does it live up to the hype? YES IT DOES! But u really dont want to Q up for almost 3hrs to get in, so try to be earlier than the early birds. Then again we were here on the day after Christmas so maybe that's why... Anyway, the curry was good. For a country that did not invent curry, they sure know how to make it unique but good. The broth is thin but flavourful. The ah ma (or grandmother, cant remember) fried chicken side dish was also top notch, crispy garlic-ky batter and tender meat. But while everyone is probably raving about the curry, i'll be raving about the broccoli, cause damn it was the best tasting fried broccoli i ever ate. Like seriously who knew broccoli could taste so good? I've eaten many kinds of broccoli over the years but this one really takes the top spot. I think even if u hate broccoli, u would probably enjoy it, so i would definitely recommend adding it as a topping.

Tried spicy level 4, initially found it to be the equivalent of mala 小辣 (small spicy) but the spice builds up and by the end of the meal I was breathing through my mouth.. became a 中辣 (medium spicy). The curry is just bursting with vegetables. The broccoli is oven roasted and delicious. I enjoyed the fried camembert side, and mango lassi. Tried a bit of the plain lassi, it's also quite flavourful, just less sweet. Ice coffee is surprisingly good btw. Staff seem tired, one banged my hand as he was putting down the plates, and staff kept dropping items while clearing plates. Advice for those who don't want to stand in queue- walk all the way down the stairs, there is a standing touch screen just in front of the entrance (to the eating area). You can get a queue number there. There is a QR code on the slip that's printed out. It first prompted us to download line app, but we had issues doing that. Click the option "do not use line" (the short sentence below the rectangle green button) It will direct you to a browser that tracks your queue. Keep the page open as the queue moves fast.
